 JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior / Principal Reliability Engineer will be the "Reliability Advocate" at ABIOMED, working with designers and other departments to determine failure models, build Reliability SOPs, and establish Reliability plans. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the medical device Reliability Engineer with strong technical and communication skills to shape an important function and experience incredible opportunity for impact.  The ideal candidate will be able to serve as a reliability advocate for the advanced development engineering and product development engineering departments.  Responsibilities span from initial build, test and analyze cycles with early prototypes to late stage activity with detailed design and verification activities.  This position is mainly an independent contributor with inter-disciplinary responsibilities. The primary focus is on technical issues, with an additional role to drive a culture where reliability is designed into concepts and products early in the process.  As such, the candidate will be able to drive cultural changes and process changes to elevate reliability awareness and practice.  The candidate will be able to provide clarity when working with project teams to better understand specific applications and failure modes, as well as recommend appropriate reliability tools, and analyses to be used with reliability planning.  

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the creation of an Abiomed reliability program aiming at continuously improving the reliability of the Automated Impella Controller, the Impella blood pumps, and the accessories, both in terms of design and manufacturing.
  • Evaluate reliability and lead the reliability growth of existing and new products.
  • Establish an early warning system to intercept reliability related quality problem that could happen in near term future.
  • Serve as the technical lead for all reliability issues, and participate in failure investigations.
  • Infuse a reliability conscious culture in Abiomed.
  •  Lead the reliability aspects of new product development.

 

Skills/Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS degree in engineering or a science discipline. MS or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Extensive experience in reliability calculation, modeling, and physics-based and mathematics based analysis.
  • Extensive experience in failure and root cause analysis. Hands on experience in failure investigation.
  • Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical design from a reliability perspective
  • Knowledge of various kinds of investigation tools such as chemical analysis, Infrared imaging, X-ray, SEM, focused ion-beam, SW tools such as minitab, Weibull++.
  • Fundamental understanding of statistics – ability to dive ‘under the hood’ of statistical packages such as Minitab.
  • Multi-industry experiences a plus.
  • An independent critical thinker who brings clarity to problem solving and innovation.
