Job Description
The Elementary School Library Instructional Assistant will support the daily activities, planning, and supervision of students in the library, under the guidance and supervision of the librarian.
Primary Responsibilities:
? Assist the librarian when requested in daily activity planning and supervision
? Assist students to locate materials within the library catalog and the space itself
? Check in/out library books and resources
? Support the librarians to sort, clean, and reshelve books
? Work with small groups of students as requested
? Operate and care for equipment used in the library for instructional purposes
? Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the librarian
? Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the librarian
? Prepare work orders, requests for supplies, and maintenance orders
? Assist in the annual inventory of library materials and the preparation of lists of missing books to be discarded
? Participate in in-service training programs as assigned
? Manage other duties as assigned by the librarian

Required Qualifications:
? Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
? Excellent English speaking skills
? Broad knowledge of a variety of subject(s)/authors
? Prior experience in library school settings would be advantageous
? The ability to welcome and support students
? Prior experience in an educational setting would be highly advantageous
? Tactful and professional front office skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
? Engage with the librarian and the classroom teacher in a committed effort to improve one’s own instructional skills
? Develop and maintain effective working relationships
? Excellent proofreading skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar)
? Demonstrated ability to work independently
? Ability to work collaboratively and provide support within the Library team and spaces
? Ability to support and manage the goals and activities of multiple groups of learners using the library at the same time
? Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and work independently despite interruptions and requests by school community (students, teachers, parents)
Terms of Employment:
This position is classified as a non-sponsored support staff position. General working hours are from 7:45 am - 3:45 pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:45 am - 12:45 pm (on site) & 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm (remote/flexible) on Fridays. In some cases, flexibility with work hours is requested to meet the needs of the role and start and end times of working hours may shift to support access for students to the library before or after school. An annual limited period contract will be issued stipulating 186 working days within the year, as per the school’s published calendar.
