The Mutual Group (TMG) is a comprehensive, integrated insurance operations platform dedicated to helping mutual insurance companies. We offer access to a modern, professional operating platform, including surplus support, technology, claims, underwriting, finance and a broad range of other resources for our members. As TMG's Head of Underwriting, you will be responsible for the overall strategy and execution of member organization underwriting operations, including P&L responsibility. You will be accountable for establishing consistent operating practices across all UW operations for TMG and its member organizations. To be successful in this role, you will be instrumental in serving current member organizations as well as assisting in future member development and onboarding. You will be a vital member of The Mutual Group’s executive leadership team helping to shape company strategy, goals, direction and priorities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for strategy and results for the underwriting operations of our member organizations, including meeting or exceeding operating goals and P&L results.
  • Accountable for establishing and monitoring performance of consistent operating practices across all businesses.
  • Responsible for building and overseeing an integrated insurance operations platform; ensuring performance across the platform together with effectiveness and efficiency for our member organizations and TMG.
  • Provides direct oversight and leadership to the Underwriting, Underwriting Services, Distribution Management, Customer Service and Insurance Operations teams.
  • Supports influential oversight and direction of Claims, Technology, and Analytics Capabilities needed to executive business strategies.
  • Accountable for establishing and executing on consistent operating practices for all businesses.
  • Oversees new member onboarding relative to Underwriting and Underwriting Services, proactively identifying risks and challenges as well as introducing innovation and enhancements where possible.
  • Develops and assesses new distribution opportunities and strategic partnerships.
  • Works with the CEO and executive leadership team to help shape overall company strategy, goals, direction, and priorities.
  • Monitors and analyzes KPIs and reporting metrics to ensure performance meets company quality and service standards. Takes action accordingly.
  • Monitors risk acceptability, pricing adequacy and classification accuracy of accounts to ensure profitability and controlled growth of business.
  • Works to maintain disciplined, productive, and profitable relationships with agents.
  • Analyzes, reports on and prudently reacts to market conditions, program results, risk exposure, etc. Maintains knowledge of competitive carriers’ best practices and market intelligence. Analyzes actuarial data to determine specific guidelines to improve loss ratios while working with sales to grow the top line.
  • Actively involved in the insurance community through forums, conferences, interviews, etc. Seen as expert and thought leader throughout the industry.
  • Actively participates in numerous leadership teams and committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by CEO, The Mutual Group.

 

Skills & Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • 15 or more years of progressively responsible experience in Property & Casualty.
  • Strong experience in multiple lines of business preferred.
  • 10 or more years prior people leadership experience.
  • Experience working with PE portfolio organization a plus.
  • Experience establishing and leading modern underwriting technology platforms and lean operations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Masters of Business Administration preferred.
  • CPCU, or IIA preferred.

 

*The successful candidate will initially be hired as an employee of GuideOne Insurance Company and automatically become an employee of TMG on the company's official transition date.
