Position:

The Java Engineer will be a new addition to an existing engineering team. In addition to software development and operations support, we are looking for leadership in defining a rigorous, automated build infrastructure and related process improvement with respect to automation. Furthermore this position will be assuming some of the Business Rule Management system application needs by training with the Appian Engineer on site. The engineer will start taking on the Appian BRMS updates on a case by case basis and developing continued interfaces between the Appian BRMS and the Java web services.

What you will be doing:

The successful candidate will be working with a smart, fun, talented, small but extremely effective, group of engineers in Rockville. You will collaborate with other team members and client personnel to interpret business requirements and general designs into detailed designs and application code. You will help build complex applications components and web services supporting client’s services that will be used by 1000s of customers. This role will entail the following day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Create/review detailed design documents, plans and strategy. Support architecture reviews.
  • Develop java applications for use online and Web Services modules
  • Ensure coded modules are performance tuned appropriately; participate in code reviews, fix defects during Product Test, System Test, and Regression Test;
  • Provide metrics/status to team leads;
  • Work closely with the test team to help identify and resolve issues. This role may also entail overseeing work of others and working day to day with client leadership personnel.
  • Research technical information and prototype new ideas. 
  • Follow best practices in continuous integration, reusability, maintainability.
  • Participate in Change Control Boards as required, and support the team in addressing Change Requests as they are received.

 

Skills & Requirements

What you need

  • 5 or more years of experience in systems analysis, design or programming and the associated development methodologies.
  • 5 or more years in OOP and clearly understands how to implement various design patterns
  • Hands-on experience in Web Development using Java (servlets, webservices) – expertise in J2EE implementations
  • Understand the operations of dynamic web pages (for example JSF, Struts, JSP, Tapestry, HTML, CSS, etc)
  • Expertise with Business Rule Management systems such as Drools, Lombardi/ILOG, Pega, Appian or similar
  • Expertise developing for and integrating with J2EE application servers (JBoss, Glassfish, Weblogic, Websphere). This means understanding perhaps some administration, but more so deployment and operation practices of code implementation.
  • Understanding the creation and management of webservices. You may have developed SOAPMessage objects, may have developed a service application from a WSDL, may have had development expertise in RESTful implementations.
  • You are familiar with continuous integration and the components that make up the development and delivery framework including SCM (Subversion), Ant, Build Systems (Maven, Hudson, CruiseControl). You have assisted in coordinating the proper setup of automated builds, release to dev, test and pre-prod environments using the build system.
  • Experience troubleshooting performance issues (DB related), Java debugging, Http Protocol debugging
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a small team on simple / mid-complex modules/issues
  • A solid understanding and appreciation for SDLC tools, processes, and methodology.
