·   This position reports directly and functionally to the Director of Technology Support Systems.



The Systems Administrator enhances and supports Food for the Hungry's management and use of information resources throughout the organization by providing administration, configuration, and support of servers and applications and by promoting, supporting, and discovering technological solutions throughout FH.  Primarily responsible for developing improvements and innovations to enhance performance.

Key Result #1 – Server Administrator.  Install, maintain, and document server operating systems and server based software applications and databases (33%)

  1. Install, support, and maintain server operating systems.
  2. Manage relationship with external hosted services provider.
  3. Install and maintain server based applications and databases.
  4. Ensure availability, security, and stability of server based services.
  5. Analyze all server logs and reports to evaluate overall health of systems and prepare management reports defining and evaluating problems and identifying solutions.
  6. Responsible for capacity analysis and planning.
  7. Conducts evaluation and testing of vendor products.
  8. Ensure backups are complete and usable.
  9. Ensure server room is physically secure and appropriate for servers.
  10. Participate in the system administration team, providing input into policies and planning, and ensuring long-term requirements of systems operations and administration are included in the overall information systems planning of the organization.
  11. Makes recommendations on long-range plans in support of Technology objectives and prepares reports as necessary.
  12. Monitors and maintains continuity with system software licensing and maintenance agreements.
  13. Collaborate with senior managers and decision makers to help identify and solve a variety of problems, plan out future infrastructure upgrades and schedule new software releases.
  14. Primarily responsible for developing improvements and innovations to enhance performance.
  15. Acts decisively in critical situations or to circumvent a potential problem.
  16. Manage Network Architecture of Server farm and Phoenix Office.
  17. Act as technical project lead for new application implementation.
  18. Provide 24x7 Support for Server and Network.

Key Result #2 – Provide Technological Solutions and support for Phoenix Office (20%)

  1. Working with the Director of Field Operations and Infrastructure and Senior Director of Information Technology to research, develop, document, and implement technological solutions for the Phoenix office.
  2. Provide support for the more difficult technological problems that arise in the Phoenix office.
  3. Backup up the helpdesk staff as needed.
  4. Develop and provide training to Phoenix IT staff on technological issues.
  5. Provide input into the operations of the Phoenix IT staff with the goal of increasing the effectiveness of their work.
  6. Provide leadership in the documentation of the technology in the Phoenix Office.

Key Result #3 – Provide Technological Solutions and support for FH Worldwide (33%)

  1. Working with the Director of Field Operations and Infrastructure, Senior Director of Information Technology and other field staff to research, develop, document, and implement technological solutions that can be applied globally.
  2. Provide technological support for field staff, prioritizing staff who are traveling.
  3. Develop and provide training on technological issues related to issues pertaining to field staff.

Key Result #4 – Provide Technical Support for programming services and web services teams. (20%)

  1. Manage development to production system for programming team.
  2. Plan, maintain and support system development environment.
  3. Provides technical leadership to application programmers.
  4. Provide analytical assistance and technical advice for development, conceptualization and implementation phases.
  5. Performs system software upgrades of broad and complex technical and business character, including planning and scheduling, testing and coordination.
  6. Coordinates disk space planning and management.
  7. Maintains production control schedule and participates in change control.
  8. Develops and promotes standard operating procedures.
  9. Responsible for the overall installation, maintenance, configuration, and integrity of computer software running all applications.
  10. In addition to daily administration, focuses on improving performance of network. Recommends and implements strategies to improve systems reliability and performance of all applications.
  11. Analyzes more complex issues and recommends fixes or improvements.

  • Strong working knowledge of PC Software (Microsoft operating systems and application suites, expertise in Ubuntu Linux and Open Office Required, expertise with MACs preferred). 
  • Experience and ability in managing active directory, windows servers and SQL*Server
  • Experience and ability in managing Linux servers.
  • Experience in managing complex network architecture.
  • Ability to relate to and manage relationships with outsourcing partners.
  • Experience installing, upgrading PC hardware.
  • Must be goal-orientated and pro-active with a relentless focus on results.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to quickly and independently get tasks done on short deadlines with attention to details and quality.
  • Ability to reason logically.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to sit at a computer for 8 hours a day doing repetitive motions on a keyboard.
  • Ability to travel (domestically and internationally) up to 20%.
  • Must be flexible in work schedule. 
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis.


Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university in Computer Science and one year related experience, 4 years prefered; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Exceptional technical potential accepted in lieu of experience.


This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities at this time. In the future, may supervise a Jr. Systems Administrator.


Proficiency in spoken and written English.  Ability to speak Spanish a plus.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
