About the Linux Systems Engineer Opportunity

You have the unique opportunity to work with modern and highly scalable global systems. You must be an avid Linux enthusiast with a several years of experience, and can understand, automate, and troubleshoot large and complex infrastructure.

 

You will play an important role on a highly skilled and technical international team that automates, builds, and maintains our growing worldwide IT infrastructure that is critical to the success of Cvent. You will be hands-on and expected to take ownership and make technical contributions. You will be responsible for managing, administering, and supporting infrastructure across all our global data centers and cloud providers.

 

Position Duties:

  • Assist in leading the effort to provide secure, stable, and scalable solutions on various Linux distributions – You must be an advanced Linux engineer
  • Design, implement, configure, and administer Linux (primarily) and Windows (when necessary) operating systems to support various applications and services
  • Design, implement, configure, and administer mission critical physical and virtual servers, DNS, and AWS infrastructure. We automate everything!
  • Support Cobbler, Infoblox, Splunk, Nginx, Git, RabbitMQ, Queue-it, encryption using Vormetric and/or SafeNet, DataStax, SQL, Couchbase, and Elasticsearch
  • Install, manage, configure, and maintain Enterprise Class Data Center hardware, including but not limited to Dell, HP, and Cisco USC Servers, and 3Par, Cohesity, Pure, and Nimble storage
  • Troubleshoot problems. Seek out issues, and resolve them
  • Maintain highly available, high quality, healthy systems for production and staging environments
  • Support and automate tasks using scripts, Chef, Jenkins, and other methodologies
  • Monitor and manage infrastructure using Datadog, Zabbix, New Relic, Icinga, and VictorOps
  • Escalate issues when necessary, involve, and work with other engineers and/or stakeholders
  • Create policy and documentation when necessary. Write runbooks for NOC team members to follow
  • Provide best practices and recommendations
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends to deal with outages and maintenance windows
  • Mentor other staff members
  • Be part of a team. Share knowledge. Be open, honest, and have a positive attitude
  • Any other duties as assigned

 

Candidate Requirements:

  • 7 or more years of experience supporting enterprise production level Linux environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technologies or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of Linux, Scripting, VMware ESXi, SAN devices, and Windows system administration
  • Excellent understanding of Linux Systems, Any Shell/Bash, sed/awk/grep/egrep, VI/VIM/Emacs, netstat, lsof, strace, ps/top/atop/dstat, grub boot config & systems rescue, fstab/disk labels, ext3/ext4, tcpdump/wireshark, IPtables, sysstat (sar/vmstat/iostat etc), run-levels & startup scripts, sudo/chroot/chkrootkit/rkhunter
  • Knowledge of LAN and WAN networks, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and HTTP
  • Familiar with ITSM tools and processes – ITIL Incident/Problem/Change management using ServiceNow or Atlassian Jira and/or Confluence
  • Identify, prioritize, and address infrastructure issues before they cause an outage
  • Ability to create scripts to automate tasks using Perl, Python, Ruby, or similar
  • Desire and ability to own problems and solve them
  • Team player with excellent communication skills and positive attitude
  • Ability to manage assignments independently
  • Experience with configuring and hosting applications on Amazon Web Services
  • Deep technical knowledge of several monitoring and analytics tools such as New Relic, Nagios, Solar Winds, Splunk, and AWS Cloudwatch
  • Experience maintaining a secure production environment
  • Experience with distributed application architectures
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for administration tasks
  • Ability to plan, hold self and others accountable to SLAs, and follow-up with others
  • Understand multiple systems and areas of functionality in a highly dynamic environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. Must be able to clearly communicate status and urgency information using telephone, instant message, group chat, and email
  • Ability to understand priorities and escalate accordingly
  • Flexible, versatile, and adaptable to day to day activities
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
