Octo Consulting Group is seeking a Systems Administrator to join our growing team.  


  • Serve as a senior systems administrator in the Unix Team. 
  • The Systems Administrator is an advanced position focusing on the administration of an Enterprise UNIX environment with multiple DMZ’s and a primary focus on Solaris on T4s and T7s and also Windows on VMware.
  • Very strong Solaris 10 and 11 skills are needed.
  • The Systems Administrator will provide day to day operation and management of both a physical and virtual infrastructure; network infrastructure includes distributed switching and internal systems software and hardware.
  • The Systems Administrator will install, configure and troubleshoot virtual servers & network issues in a heterogeneous enterprise network environment. 
  • Candidate must demonstrate understanding and application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the system administration field. 
  • Candidate must be an independent thinker and work under general supervision only.

Skills & Requirements

  • Assist in the management of 60+ servers in two sites to include, analyzing and resolving problems associated with server hardware, building and installing Solaris and windows images, monitoring and tuning system software, and creating Shell scripts.  
  • Maintain DNS, DNS Bind, NFS, DHCP, web, and FTP services in a Solaris enterprise environment.
  • Work with application teams and other IT support personnel to coordinate system software changes and support changes.
  • Provide documentation and verification of all installation and configuration steps in documentation to be delivered to the customer.
  • Develop installation scripts to automate the system installation.
  • Support running SW integration test to verify the system operation.
  • Submit problem reports for errors found.
  • Work with software developers as needed to help diagnose and identify the root cause of problems found during software integration.
  • Perform system security scans, apply patches, ensure that systems meet all web, application, and database requirements, and assist in the development of documentation.
  • Maintain high levels of customer satisfaction, maintaining visibility with the customer, and consistently deliver timely, high-quality products and services on current and/or new task orders/contracts.

Preferred Experience and Capabilities:

  • Experience providing Systems or Network Administration Technical Support
  • 5 years of hands-on experience with Solaris (8/9/10/11), DNS, DNSSEC
  • 4 years of hands-on Datadomain
  • 4 years of hands-on Netbackup
  • Scripting experience (Shell, CGI, and Perl)
  • Solid understanding of UNIX host-based security
  • Understanding of iSCSI, NAS, & SAN infrastructure and configuration
  • PeopleSoft experience

Certifications and Clearance: Treasury Public Trust or Top Secret strongly preferred

Required Education: BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or equivalent

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc.
  • Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of time

Work Environment:

  • Individual’s primary workstation is located in an office area
  • The noise level in this environment is low to moderate
