Octo Consulting Group is looking for a qualified candidate to fill an on-site Engineer position on a federal services contract in Quantico, VA.  The candidate will lead activities and interface directly with the client in support of an Information Technology (IT)/Information Management (IM) system that provides accurate and timely data deployed at the client site. The position serves as the technical expert for issue identification and resolution, continuity of operation planning and testing, supporting and maintaining Microsoft SQL technologies utilized in the environment, SAN appliances, and the support of multiple application interfaces. The on-site Engineer will communicate frequently with the client, leading meetings, identifying process improvements and technology gaps with the goal of providing solutions for closing those gaps. The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, with advanced critical thinking skills, who is capable of evaluating problems, identifying next steps, and providing recommendations on the spot. The candidate must be flexible and be able to work in an intense environment with multiple competing priorities. 


  • Lead, manage, and direct resources for all COOP exercises.
  • Serve as the primary POC for, and provide technical support to resolve issues affecting the Client’s operational environments.
  • Lead client engagements/meetings in support of application testing, architectural configuration changes, issue tracking and triage initiatives, and other requirements as they arise.
  • Serve as the technical SME with regard to application interfaces between the client’s information management system and external partner organizations, and application(s) architecture(s)/operability
  • Lead the deployment of major system upgrades that affect multiple components requiring risk identification and mitigation, activity planning, resource identification, and proactive client communications.
  • Support MS Windows and SQL Server installations to ensure proper configuration, maintenance plans are in place and working, system tuning for performance, and make recommendations for performance, stability enhancements, and design.
  • Utilize a process management application (JIRA) to capture and track the completion of all technical project requirements, and support decision making processes.
  • Create documentation that tracks configuration, processes, and improvements to memorialize development and implementation efforts.
  • Primary duty location: Quantico, VA.


Skills & Requirements

Minimum Required Skills:

  • Proficient in T-SQL, PL/SQL, SQL languages and Relational Database Design.
  • Experience working with application interfaces and XML configuration files.
  • Strong knowledge and expertise in supporting medium scaled Microsoft environments.
  • Experience working with teams of various skill sets, and assisting in knowledge transfer or skill growth for team members.
  • Outstanding and effective verbal and written communication skills, and comfortable with interacting directly with customers.
  • Independent, self-starter, and proactive mindset with the ability to establish strategic objectives, project plans and milestone goals with strong work ethic taking ownership of all duties and responsibilities. Be able to accomplish tasks with little to no direction.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, interpersonal and presentation skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and activities, while being flexible to changing priorities as defined by the client.
  • Experienced in applying project management, ITIL, and proven change management skills.
  • Must enjoy working in a collaborative, service centric environment across different functional areas and in ambiguous situations.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field).
  • 7-10 Years of technical experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience supporting SAN environments. Experience with NetApp Data OnTap is a plus.
  • Extensive experience managing and troubleshooting Microsoft Environments to include, SQL Server, Windows Server 2008R2 and 2012, .NET Applications.
  • Proven track record to drive rapid issue identification and solution design for client objectives, and the ability to translate broader business initiatives into clear team objectives, concrete delivery goals, and coordinated action item lists.
  • Knowledge of other data analytic applications and methodologies outside the Microsoft application family.
  • 2008 MCITP: Enterprise Administrator/MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certification or similar.


  • Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science or equivalent work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc.
  • Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of time

  • Individual’s primary workstation is located in an office area
  • The noise level in this environment is low to moderate
