EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT MEDICAL DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Purpose
The Medical Director provides the medical and administrative leadership necessary to deliver Patient- Centered care. Oversees the availability, timeliness, quality, and appropriateness of clinical services offered to the Emergency Department patient, while working to improve overall departmental performance.
Essential Functions
This list does not cover every potential Medical Director responsibility. Other duties may be required depending on the specific needs of your department and patients. This position typically works on average a minimum of 30 hours per week between administrative responsibilities and clinical coverage at an ESP hospital.
Provides the Medical and Administrative Leadership Necessary to Deliver Patient-Centered Care
? The Medical Director enhances the ESP relationships with its partners and clients to create a strong, effective Emergency Department.
? The Medical Director provides direction, leadership, and support for ED physicians and advanced practice providers
? The Medical Director promotes a positive, collaborative, and team building relationship between the ED physicians, the Hospital, and ESP
? The Medical Director supports ESP and its strategic goals and partners with ESP to create a long lasting Emergency Physician Group model.
? The Medical Director is a role model and the public face of the ED and of ESP in all issues concerning the Department.
? Oversees the availability, timeliness, quality and appropriateness of clinical services offered to the Emergency Department patient
? Develops and implements pathways and protocols to standardize care within the ED
? Ensures that transitions between providers, departments and healthcare settings are respectful, coordinated and efficient
? Encourages informed and shared decision-making and positive communication between ED providers and their patients
? Works with the Hospital to establish and maintain a strong Quality Assurance and Peer Review Program for Physicians
? Works with the Hospital to establish and maintain a TJC compliant QA program for lab, X-Ray and EKG
? Works with the Hospital, ESP, and Billing to encourage accurate and timely documentation, including regular chart audits
? Works with the Hospital and ESP Risk Management to establish effective performance reviews
? Monitors department-based data to identify improvement opportunities and takes a proactive approach to better the quality and timeliness of care
? Partners with ED Nursing leadership to review and approve all ED policies on a regular basis, and develop new policies, as appropriate

Coordinates the ESP- Hospital Relationship
? Participate as asked in the hospital’s strategic and operational planning activities: development of annual
plans and budgets, facility improvement plans, capital investment decisions, program development,
technology assessment, accreditation, education, research, planning and marketing efforts
? Takes an active role in Hospital Medical Staff activities, including leadership and attending the Hospitals’
Medical Executive Committee meetings, if appropriate
? Participate in hospital committees designed to improve ED care and performing committee
responsibilities as assigned
? Establish, promote, and participate in a collaborative, interdisciplinary ED leadership team
? Partner with hospital in reviewing appropriate utilization of resources to comply with hospital’s
productivity, efficiency and cost-containing guidelines
? Works with the Hospital to establish appropriate ED budgets and equipment requests
? Oversee proper collection, review and monitoring of data for the ED, prioritize concerns, and solicit
hospital collaboration and leadership to make necessary improvements
? Partner with hospital administrators to implement The Joint Commission (TJC) and other patient safety
initiatives as mandated by state and federal agencies
? Provide guidance and direction to foster strong provider relations within the community through
interaction with local EMS and participation in state-wide Disaster Planning and Drills as necessary
? Submit monthly log indicating hours worked as directed by the Hospital Administrator
Provides Direction, Leadership and Support for ED Physicians and Mid-level Providers
? Identify staffing needs. Support ESP recruitment and retention efforts. Communicate staffing
expectations to physicians.
? Provide feedback for improvement opportunities from the physicians and providers to ESP
? Establish a system that regularly reviews and evaluates physician performance including working with
ESP to develop a plan to improve provider performance annually
? Monitor morale and physician satisfaction levels, proactively initiate teambuilding efforts within the
group encouraging open, honest communication among team members
? Serve as a partner role model and cover equitable share of difficult and/or open shifts
? Develop a regular administrative routine with established office hours, regular rounding within and
across departments, and regularly scheduled staff meetings
? Be a clinical role model for ESP Team
? Schedule and preside over regular ED Meetings
? Interview potential new staff
? Review credentials of new staff and work with ESP to get the credentialing completed
? Be responsible for orienting new Physicians and Mid levels
Supports ESP and its Strategic Goals
? Acknowledge ESP’s mission and vision statement. Make leadership decisions based on ESP guiding
principles
? Be on call for administrative issues
? Keep confidential information and data that might risk ESP’s competitive advantage
? Ensure compliance with ESP risk management policies and procedures
? Strengthen contractual partnership between ESP and the hospital by providing strong, reliable and
highly-visible leadership onsite
? Strengthen contractual partnership between ESP and our Physicians and Mid Levels by establishing
strong two way communications
