  Position Description: 

The Chief of Staff (COS) serves as key strategic advisor and problem solver for the purpose of executing SAS strategic objectives. The COS will report directly to the superintendent and serve on the superintendent’s cabinet. Primary responsibilities include the execution of significant projects, progress monitoring and reporting, research, policy advice, internal and external communication, and operational assistance.

The COS serves as a spokesperson on behalf of the superintendent’s office, driving communication, collaboration, and alignment to accomplish stated goals of the school. The COS performs a wide range of executive and high level academic and administrative duties, with broad scope and complexity across all functional parts of the school. Success will require outstanding professional agility, originality, judgment, and a thorough knowledge of the programs and organizational structures of the school. The COS is expected to develop recommendations to the superintendent that involve subtle, sensitive, and sophisticated relationships, and take into account divergent and often contradictory demands and expectations. 

Job Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee operations of the Office of the Superintendent to ensure the full execution of the strategic plan and the daily operations of the school. This includes executive meetings, agenda development, action reports, board communication and committees, and follow up activities.
  • Communicate with key leaders regarding both strategic and emergent issues that need attention.
  • Ensure that expectations and deadlines are clearly communicated to relevant stakeholders, and that issues needing the superintendent’s attention are dealt with in a timely way.
  • Set the strategic direction of the admin calendar to ensure that it aligns with stated priorities, including vetting and evaluating requests from internal and external constituents. 
  • Provide briefing and background materials on emerging issues, evaluate materials and propose recommendations leading to their solutions.
  • Provide research from academic sources and peer institutions on priorities identified by the superintendent.
  • Actively participate as a thought leader on the Superintendent’s Cabinet and make significant contributions to immediate and long-range academic and administrative goals.
  • Serve as a key contact to departments, staff and community members.
  • Create briefing materials for working with community members, alumni, donors, and corporate partners.
  • Represent the school at campus and community functions and organizations in conjunction with the Superintendent, and in his absence.
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to facilitate conversations that lead to consensus, buy-in, and adjustments as needed. 
  • Work closely with administrative staff, faculty, parents and students to facilitate solutions and expedite responses across divisions.
  • Anticipate and assure that appropriate plans are in place and executed for meetings and events.
  • Review correspondence, handle sensitive calls and visitors; assist in crisis management.
  • Assist in the coordination of special events as needed.
  • Perform other duties and special assignments as determined by the Superintendent.

SupervisorThis position reports directly to the Superintendent and is a member of the Superintendent’s cabinet.

Terms of Employment: The successful candidate will be offered a two-year initial administrative contract, with subsequent year-to-year contracts dependent upon demonstrated achievement towards annual goals.
