The Modern is looking for a Junior Sommelier to join the team! 

The Modern celebrates 3 starts NYT, 2 Starts Michelin, and 2016 Wine Spectator Grand award. The Modern is part of Danny meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group.

 The ideal candidate

  • Thrives in a fast paced, non-stop environment, is adept at prioritizing tasks and loves solving problems
  • Has floor experience in restaurants, new to working in wine, but has some exposure and experience
  •  Works both independently as well as comfortable being an integral part of a larger team
  • Displays a passion to better learn and understand what a Sommelier is at the heart of this position at The Modern
  • This position works hand in hand with the Wine Director, and Sommelier's on all aspects of wine operations
  • The ability to be strategic, flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient is in your DNA
  •  Superior written and verbal communication skills, sense of urgency, empathy, attention to detail, and floor skills are a requirement
  • Is eager to learn from a team of 6 Sommelier's

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a key team member within the restaurant and wine team as a whole by being introduced to what it means to be a Sommelier in our restaurant and how to develop the skills to become one

  • Able to navigate and help keep our cellar organized and as it should be and make sure to act as support for station Sommelier’s
  • Assist in delivery and stocking of wine on a daily basis
  • By working with these wines on a daily basis, become familiar with all of the great wines and regions of the world
  • Assist the rest of the Sommelier team in all details of daily operation BOH and during service with ensuring they are set up for success
  • Key team member for monthly inventory of all wines.
  • Be able to quickly and efficiently retrieve wines and become familiar with them for our guests
  • Be able to “read a room” and know where to jump in to assist, with proper wine service skills including but not limited to; decanting, presentation, topping up, glassware, etc.

 

Communication

  • Maintain systems such as Binwise, Avero, Tripleseat and others in the daily operations of the beverage department.
  • Strong communication skills are necessary to ensure all sidework is complete correctly and our cellars are stocked properly
  • Able to clearly understand quick direction in the middle of service and execute it in a timely professional way.

Internal & External Relationships       

  • Professionally represent  The Modern and USHG
  • Develop relationships with members of the The Modern family
  • Foster positive relationships with all USHG restaurants in order to share best practice

 

Relevant Knowledge, Skills & Ability

  • Restaurant service experience and skills required
  • Integrity
  • Foundation or close to a Certified level wine knowledge in major wine regions
  • Multi-tasking
  • Able to lift 20+ lbs
  • Problem solving
  • Initiative & follow through
  • Superior verbal & written communication
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent Understanding of Excel, Word, Outlook etc.
  • Familiar with Binwise, Tripleseat, Open Table, Avero and other restaurant software is a plus
