Union Square Events is seeking a Controller to join the team!

Since opening Union Square Cafe in 1985, Union Square Hospitality Group has grown into an innovative family of food and hospitality businesses including fine dining restaurants, museum cafes, casual dining eateries, an executive training business and Union Square Events.

Established in 2005, Union Square Events has emerged as a culinary and operations leader within the hospitality industry. Through collaborations with a diverse portfolio of best in class clients and business partners, Union Square Events produces one-of-a-kind catered events and unparalleled dining experiences within a variety of cultural, corporate and entertainment venues throughout New York City.

The Controller will lead and customize existing practices and responsibilities including the production of periodic financial reports, managing a strong system of accounting records, overlook a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities

Improve profitability by projecting operation results and cash flow to make decisions and to support the team in driving the business book-appropriate journal entries

  • Coordinate the budget process at the unit and prepare the budget for the coming year
  • Actively search out and develop new reports and analyses that may be useful to management as management works to improve operations
  • Prepare interim reports that summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, earnings based on pas, present and expected operations
  • Prepare short-term cash flow analyses as cash needs warrant
  • Prepare miscellaneous analyses and communicate with requesting manager at unit or home office
  • Review profitability analysis on catering events when below a certain threshold to ensure overall profitability
  • Participate in special projects and compile related reports
  • Lead and perform an advisory and interpretive role
  • Coach department heads regarding their financial responsibilities and effective financial management techniques

Improve efficiency and compliance by creating, implementing, and maintaining systems

  • Establish and maintain systems and controls which verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data, and enhance each unit's value
  • Ensure adequate controls are installed and maintained for the protection of the assets against loss or misappropriation
  • Perform internal audits to review processes and work product of other departments
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policiees, work procedures, and instructions
  • Work with appropriate private, local, state and federal government representatives on audits, including but not limited to: sales tax, worker's comp, and percentage rent
  • Remain current on issues involving industry practices, employee law, and GAAP Pronouncements
  • Adhere to the highest ethical and business standards, and to the laws of the countries, states, and cities in which USE does business

Collaborate with the USHG Business Development team in order to develop and implement new business strategies and ensure effective roll out of new businesses

  • Review prospective business arrangements for feasibility and soundness
  • Project revenue and profitability of new business propositions
  • Lead budgeting process of each new venture
  • Coordinate with Finance/Accounting Departments of Partners in Sports and Entertainment ventures
  • Roll out systems and best practices in new ventures and ensure each unit conforms to USE policies
  • Provide support to Operation teams at off-site venues

Ensure rigorous knowledge of and adherence to all applicable laws, policies and procedures

  • With respect to audits, including but not limited to: sales tax, worker's comp, and percentage rent audits
  • Communicate with company's bank representatives regarding bank accounts
  • Review and approve applications for new credit arrangements
  • Prepare reports required by regulatory agencies
  • Prepare and file monthly sales tax returns accurately and timely
  • Adhere to all USE procedures as it pertains to personal appearance, attendance and conduct
  • Complete all assigned administrative requirements accurately and on time
  • Remain current and compliant with the correct HR practices and policies
  • Attend USHG management classes to maintain and exceed professional standards

Continuously build a high-performance team

  • In conjunction with USE Management and HR Business Partner, hire and train according to USE standards for hospitality and excellence
  • Facilitate the onboarding and training process for all new direct reports
  • Provide continuous training and leadership to develop and grow team
  • Ensure that all direct reports receive annual performance reviews
  • Coordinate with HR Business Partner and USHG Training Coordinator to ensure managers complete USHG training programs

  • Strong understanding of USE culture and philosophy
  • Proficient in restaurant financial knowledge (P&L, budget, food & labor costs)
  • Proficient in restaurant systems (i.e. Micros/OT/Avero)
  • Excellent culinary and facilities operations knowledge

Other Qualifications:

 Experience:

  • At least 5+ years of hospitality accounting knowledge
  • Restaurant bookkeeping experience is preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.  Experience in CaterXpert and Filemaker Pro preferred but not required

Technical:

  • Strong Computer Skills

Certifications:

  • CPA or MBA required

Language:

  • English
