Founded by CEO Danny Meyer with the opening of Union Square Cafe in 1985, Union Square Hospitality Group has created some of New York’s most beloved restaurants, cafes, and bars such as Gramercy Tavern, Maialino, The Modern, Manhatta and Porchlight to name a few!


As the designated USHG Associate Director of Restaurant Operations (‘ADO’) you will be responsible for the overall quality of hospitality, food and beverage, service, and financial health of established USHG Restaurant Operations. The ADO will ensure that our operational focus is aligned with the mission and vision of USHG at all times. Your ability to embody all family values and model ‘being a restaurateur’ by virtue of active business presence, enlightened hospitality and inspiring all leaders to create raves for our guests and stakeholders is paramount to the success of this position.  You will be accountable for interviewing key hires for daily operations, coaching and guiding leaders with best practices and steering the overall financial health of each business. As the acting ADO you will collaborate with USHG Senior Leadership on a bi-weekly basis at Op Comm meetings to ensure that all operational areas, financial expectations and Catering support needs are best in class at all times. The ADO will also lead a horizontal based on their skill set.

Key Responsibilities

Continuously build a high performance team across all USHG brands to deliver uncommon hospitality and excellence to their guests

  • In conjunction with Senior Director of Operations (SRDO) redefine what it means for all USHG leaders to be exceptional ‘restaurateurs’ and business people
  • Collaborate with SRDO to continually author and refine standards of service across USHG business operations
  • Ensure that Senior Leaders hire and train according to USHG standards for hospitality and excellence
  • Work with SRDO and Senior Director of New Restaurant Operations (SDNRO) to provide continuous coaching, training and leadership development opportunities through the identification and activation of exceptional team members designated to support new openings
  • Collaborate with SRDO and Chief Culture Officer to strategize innovative recruiting methods while activating participation from all USHG business units to make a career path at USHG perpetually compelling for future generations of talent

Ensure all leaders are performing while transforming to continually build strong and compelling brands for all stakeholders 

  • Collaborate with the USHG Marketing team and SRDO as needed to ensure that each brand has a clear identity and that all leadership teams drive social media listening, guest engagement and proactive dot connecting to ensure we anticipate guest needs and raise the bar for hospitality legends
  • Ensure that all team members understand and can articulate the key elements of their entire operation and specific brand
  • Galvanize the need and excitement for all managers to push constant innovation, change and technology tools as a way to help USHG captivate our guests’ hearts and loyalty during these turbulent times

Fully understand, anticipate, support the creative strategies and coaching required to assist Management teams to achieve defined profitability , performance goals and metrics

  • Establish annual goals for the Senior Leaders of the Business and are supported to establish annual goals for all other managers within the operation
  • Support the creation and implementation of realistic budgets with USHG Accounting that drive business unit performance to financial success while maintaining the excellence of the brand
  • Create strategic plans with each business team to ensure alignment with mission, vision and strategies of company

Ensure thorough knowledge of any contracts, leases or business relationships required to maintain harmonious operations

  • Work closely and harmoniously with both Fosun and CBRE leaders to continue to strengthen our existing partnership in a way that positively impacts all involved
  • Work with both Core Restaurant and Union Square Events leaders to share best practices and refine new operational tools
  • Review with USHG Legal and USHG Business Development any existing contracts for each business to understand the primary deal terms and key performance metrics
  • Participate and guide ongoing ‘client’ or business partner interactions with USHG or USE leaders as it relates to strategic development of key business decisions 
Stay abreast of adherence to all applicable laws, policies and procedures
  • Ensure the Leadership teams remains current and compliant with the correct HR practices and policies
  • Ensure the Leadership teams complete all Payroll processes accurately, on time and according to business/accounting procedures
  • Establish clear goals with the business unit leaders to ensure they hold employees accountable to all family values,  standards, practices, evaluating and/or following disciplinary procedure when necessary
