Responsible for driving a safe work environment for the Alabama Works plants (Bessemer and Mini-Mill). Assists the Sr. Safety Manager with planning, implementing, auditing and training to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illness and financial losses. Administers and coordinates all aspects of plant safety for both pipe plants including but not limited to: OSHA compliance, other regulatory compliance, safety audits and inspections, incident investigations, safety committee leadership, safety teams, New Employee Safety training and other safety training as needed. The Safety Engineer must be willing to work flexible shifts to cover incidents, outages, and off turn safety audits. This position reports directly to the Alabama Works Senior Safety and Health Manager.
Essential Functions:
Strong self-direction and motivation is required
Provides information to Plant Manager, supervisors, and salaried personnel regarding compliance with Federal and State OSHA regulations.
Compiles, analyzes and interprets statistical data; prepares reports for daily, weekly and monthly safety activities.
Must have good oral and written skills
Detail orientation and ability to prioritize and delegate
Understanding of Hot Work, Confined Space and Energy Control Procedures
Understanding of Lean 6s Housekeeping Programs
Knowledge of hazardous materials, safety practices and SDS information
Knowledge of performing safety inspections and providing detailed corrective action recommendations to plant management
Ability to provide New Employee Orientation safety training
Must have skills with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Administers, maintains data base on the Respiratory Protection and Hearing Conservation Programs.
Administer, maintains records, and data base for all Safety Training
Attend monthly safety committee meeting to conduct training, and identifying immediate items that need to be addressed.
Responds to Plant Emergencies and assists Security and Plant EMT’s as needed
Maintains current file on all needed Material Data Safety Sheets
Assists Third Party Industrial Hygiene representatives with sampling
Performs other duties as assigned.

Scope Data/Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
The employee will be working in an office environment but will be walking through the plant on a daily basis exposing the employee to foundry operations. The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, oils, and atmospheric conditions such as dust, fumes, and metallic particles.
The employee will be required to perform the following actions regularly: standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting. The majority of the actions will be standing and walking.
Requirements:
Must have completed junior year in a college or university.
Must be majoring in a safety, health, or environmental related field.
