Key Responsibilities

The employee relations manager is responsible for managing a range of activities related to employee/labor relations functions at our Alabama Works Campus located in Bessemer, Alabama. The primary function of this position is managing Labor and Employee Relations activities. Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Implements and maintains the Company’s labor relations programs, policies and procedures.
  • Builds effective and sustainable union and/or employee relationships.
  • Responsible for timely answers to all grievances, request for information and contractual procedures relative to the grievance process.
  • Gathers investigatory materials  as required to properly defend the Company during arbitration hearings, EEO, NLRB or other related inquiries.
  • Works with legal team in preparing documents relative to the defense of the Company in issues pertaining to NLRB charges, EEOC complaints etc.
  • Administers and interprets various labor agreements, administers grievance procedures; provides labor relations support during contract negotiations.
  • Acts as a liaison between department managers and union representatives.
  • Provides professional advice and counsel to managers and supervisors regarding contractual provisions, personnel practices, policy and employment laws.
  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal discrimination and employment regulations.
  • Analyze compliance requirements, trends and key metrics and partner with the broader HR organization to develop and implement solutions, programs and policies.
  • Conduct effective and objective investigations.
  • Create and implement communication plans that support key business and HR-related initiatives.
  • Provides up to date metrics and tracking to document the labor relations activities of the site.
  • Administers the job bidding and posting requirements per the labor agreements.




Skills/Requirements

Required Skills, Experience and Education

  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of progressive Employee/Labor Relations experience.
  • Strong labor relations experience.
  • Prior contract negotiations experience is a must (First chair experience necessary)
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to positively influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven track record in developing and aligning HR strategy with business and organization initiatives.
  • Independent thinker with strong decision making skills.
  • Highly results oriented with the ability to organize, prioritize and implement multiple projects within targeted deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate and communicate business strategies into measurable and operational people strategies, plans and actions.
  • Broad business knowledge and demonstrated ability to stay abreast of business and functional trends.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential and sensitive matters in a professional and discretionary manner. 
  • Experience in all areas of employee relations (labor agreements, negotiations, investigations, arbitrations, grievance analysis, employee engagement, workforce planning, etc.)
  • Bachelor's Degree in HR, Business, and/or Industrial Relations or equivalent is required. Master’s degree is a plus. SPHR/PHR certification is a plus.
  • Experience in a fast paced union or manufacturing environment is desired.
