Union Square Hospitality Group is looking for an
Assistant Wine Director
to join the team at The Modern!



The Assistant Wine Director is responsible for ensuring the excellence, creativity, brand promise and profitability of the beverage programs within our establishment.  This position serves as a leader, educator, coach and mentor to the sommeliers, bartenders and front of house line staff at Art Food, which includes The Modern and the Cafes at MoMA.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with Wine Director to thoughtfully compile and educate on the wine program in a way that adds quality and value to enhance the guest experience
  • Actively seek opportunities to connect with guests during service periods by being present in the dining room
  • Design and organize wine education programs and initiatives that assist the management teams in educating the staff (i.e. lineup tastings, regular testing, purveyor visits, educational trips, etc.) 
  • Work with Wine Director, accounting team and operations team to ensure that all budgeted cost percentages are met each period
  • Coordinate wine events for the restaurant when appropriate.
  • Work closely with the wine team each and every shift in order to continually drive service and beverage operations standards
  • Ensure that all beverage inventory is completed with attention to detail and accuracy so that the financial performance metrics of Art Food remain reliable
  • Work with Wine Director, to schedule Sommeliers and wine team support staff appropriately for service and ensure that it is posted in a timely manner.
  • Continuously build a high performance team through best hiring practices and ensure that wine team members are consistently being coached and trained to ensure that they are bringing their best each and every day.




Skills/Requirements
  • 3+ years of restaurant beverage management experience
  • Strong Computer Skills/Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point) 
  • Excellent Beverage knowledge – including beer, wine and spirits
  • Excellent understanding of beverage inventory and cost management
  • Excellent knowledge of restaurant service team roles
  • Strong Communication Skills (verbal/oral/listening)
  • Strong People Management Skills
  • Understanding of Restaurant Systems (POS/OT/Avero)

Certifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university preferred

 Work Environment:

  • Involves walking and/or standing for most of the day
