Job Description

Performs a variety of activities related to the maintenance of databases, including software installations and upgrades, monitoring performance, capacity planning, quality assurance. 

Job Responsibilities

Installation and configuration of SQL Server

Backup and recovery of database systems

Performance tuning and system optimization

System and DBMS performance monitoring

Creation of database related system and DBMS alerts

Perform Database Consistency Checks (DBCC) to identify problems and errors

Collection of relevant performance counters

Perform daily checks and maintenance activities

SQL statement tuning

Identify database design limitations and RDBMS limitations

Administering the SQL Server by creating user logins with appropriate roles, dropping and enrolling the logins

Mentoring employees requiring database knowledge

Plan and perform software upgrades

Pilot new database technologies and versions

Serve as a resource to other members of the hosting group and development

Interact with development and vendors relating to applications associated with the database environment

Collaborate with SAN team to identify performance issues

Job Requirements

5-7 years of experience

Post-secondary education in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Current certification in SQL Server is an asset and ongoing industry certification is expected

Experience supporting and troubleshooting SQL servers running on VMware is an asset

Supporting a 7x24 environment

Skills Required

Ability to manage a large number of systems/databases

Experience working with large databases and large tables

Ability to import, export, and manipulate data using SSIS and 3rd party tools and prepare adhoc reports using T-SQL

Excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills

Ability to create programmatic simulations and tests

Excellent time management and organizational skills

Professional manner with strong interpersonal skills; a team player and a relationship builder

Self-directed work habits, applied with creativity, resourcefulness and a sense of personal responsibility

Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing

Ability to think strategically and plan for innovation/change; flexibility/adaptability

Must have a proactive approach to tasks and projects and think in contingencies

Graphing and report preparation skills

Able to clearly document processes as required

Excellent listening skills

Knowledge of SQL Replications and Mirroring and MS clustering

Knowledge of SQL 2008, SQL 2012 and 2014 in clustered and stand-alone configurations

Knowledge of PostgreSQL is an asset

Familiar with windows scripting.

Knowledge of enterprise database systems performance monitoring and administration tools

Advanced level of desktop application skills (Word, Outlook, Excel ) with ability to learn new technologies and applications quickly as new application skills are required for the position

Knowledge of Windows operating systems

Knowledge of Linux operating systems is an asset

Working Hours

40 hours per week – overtime as needed

24x7 on call rotation (approximately one week in every eleven)

Availability for downtime maintenance window while on call - Sunday(1:00 PM – 3:00 PM EST) and Wednesday (1:00 AM – 2:00 AM EST)
