We are seeking a 

General Manager 

to join our team!

Job Summary: 

: Collaborating directly with Executive Chef of The Modern, lead and manage all facets of the front of house and operations of The Modern, a $20mm multifaceted Michelin Star, top 20 in NYC Zagat Guide and 3 Star NY Times reviewed restaurant in the foremost Museum of Modern Art in the world. The General Manager will continue to build a better brand with the best management and staff by constantly improving our food and service while focusing on our client/partner and our guests and providing unparalleled hospitality. The General Manager will work closely with the Executive Chef and Director to achieve shared goals. This position requires flexibility and a wide range of hospitality, service and business acumen. The General Manager actively embodies, inspires and teaches skills that will elevate the core values of USHG.

Key Responsibilities:

Work with Director to establish and achieve clear profitability and performance goals and metrics for The Modern
• Drive organization of creation of realistic budgets that drive the businesses to financial success while maintaining the excellence of the brand.
• Work with Director to determine best allocation of capital for The Modern
• Work with Controller, Director and management teams to create periodic financial forecasts and prepare and lead end of period forecasting meetings
• Guide front of house manager in monitoring payroll on a weekly basis and making proactive adjustments to staff schedules as needed
• Review all non-essential purchases with the appropriate members of the management team
• Partner with Operations team to maintain the excellence of the physical plant by working with the management team to address R & M issues in a timely and cost-effective manner

Work with all F.O.H. managers to achieve individual performance goals and metrics that profitably grow the business while strengthening The Modern’s brand and culture.
• Establish performance goals that support excellence with people, guests and financial for self and all direct reports
• Maintain list of AOR’s for each team member and hold them accountable to achieving goals and strategic plans
• Maintain org chart for decision making and for accountability in development of managers and staff
• Conduct perform performance reviews for each manager and employee to monitor performance on goals as well as embodiment of Family Values at designated periods throughout the year
• Drive communication between Guest Relations department and ensure maximization of covers and implementation of best practices in reservations process
• Meet or exceed budgeted numbers while continually burnishing the culture and brand
• Work with PR/Marketing department to enact PR/Marketing Strategic Plans to ensure that The Modern brand has a clear and articulated point of view
• Assure that Social Media engagement is closely monitored external touchpoints consistently updated
• Ensure excellence of all printed and web based materials
• Ensure that all team members understand and can articulate the key elements of The Modern brand
• Maintain or improve external recognition (Zagat, NYT, Michelin, James Beard, etc.) for The Modern
• Meet or exceed DOH regulations for sanitation by ensuring an “A” letter grade on all sanitary inspections
• Ensure the uncommon excellence of every food and beverage item offered at The Modern
• Ensure the “good bones” of all systems
• Be attentive and adjust every aspect of the guest experience as needed to ensure an uncommon hospitality and excellent experience
• Ensure a clean, beautifully maintained décor that fits The Modern brand
• Maintain protocol for influencers dining with us and assure that all managers and staff are fully apprised of expectations at all times

Maintain and grow relationships with all corresponding departments at MoMA, Art Food and across USHG
• Find opportunities to collaborate on initiative and marketing to show both brands as world-class including MoMA Retail, Visitor Services, MoMA Film and MoMA Special Events
• Honor their work, volunteerism and assistance to Art Food
• Drive MoMA Trustee and important stakeholder relationships with reservations and front door
• Assure that entire staff understands the importance of being great tenants of MoMA
• Attend and contribute to all AF Steering Committee meetings
• Continuously seek opportunities to drive community across Art Food businesses
• Partner with Executive Committee to assure favorable ratings on GPTW Trust Index across businesses
• Promote and support USHG’s efforts to work as ‘One Ball of Wax’ and continually seek ways of taking care of each other and building community across our businesses

Continuously recruit strong candidates for all positions and grow Generation Next through empowerment and development
• Grow “Gen Next” leaders for USHG
• In conjunction with designated annual review periods, analyze and approve all pay increases
• Attract talent through networking relationships and current staff
• Interview candidates that are curiously intelligent with a passion for our industry
• Educate hiring managers on best practices for interviewing and hiring
• Lead managers to ensure the excellence of front of house training programs
• Lead managers to coordinate and ensure the excellence of daily and monthly training
• With management team, drive balanced house schedule that drives efficiencies and guest raves while celebrating succession and growth

Ensure that The Modern continuously delivers uncommon hospitality and excellence to its guests. Actively embody, inspire and teach the tenets of Enlightened Hospitality to all.
• Ensure every employee has the capacity to be one of the top three performers on their team in both Hospitality and Excellence.
• Build the culture of enlightened hospitality by ensuring excellent hiring practices, training, and work environment
• Assure that GEM initiatives are fostered in reservations and service process
• Assure that Guest Relations team has defined partnership with Welcome Team to create raves and drive guest engagement
• Assure that concierge program is activated and nurtured proactively and consistently each year
• Be attentive and adjust every aspect of the guest experience as needed to ensure excellence
• Direct entire management team in strengthening relationships with regular guests
• Actively encourage new, local, community service initiative ideas at the restaurant level and engage staff participation
• Direct management team to continuously generate raves from The Modern’s guests






Skills/Requirements
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Excellent Communication Skills (verbal/oral/listening)
    • Excellent Leadership & Organizations Management Skills
    • Excellent understanding of USHG Culture/Philosophy
    • Proficient in Restaurant Financial Knowledge (P&L /Budget/Food & Labor Costs)
    • Proficient in Restaurant Systems (Micros/OT/Avero)
    • Excellent Dining Room and Facilities Operations Knowledge
    • Food & Beverage knowledge with a solid understanding of wines of all regions and spirits
    • Understanding of HR Practices/Policies/Procedures
    Preferred Experience:
    • 5 years in a leadership position
    • 5+ years experience in fine dining, high volume and sales preferred
    • 2-3 years experience as a GM in business over 5 million in sales
    • 2-3 years experience in a multi-unit property with client/partner relations
    • Experience in all facets of a fine dining restaurant
    • AGM Experience
    • Specific knowledge of Purchasing, Receiving, Maintenance, Inventory, P & L, Cash handling procedures and controls, HR systems and Sales and Marketing
    • Operations experience in Maitre d’ position, Reservationist, Bar Management, Wine Director, Service Director, Special Events, Expeditor, Stewarding and Porter Management
    • 2-3 years of experience in a client/partner environment

    Physical Abilities:
    • Must be able to stand, reach with arms and hands, bend and stoop, kneel and crouch more than 50% of the time.
    • Must also possess the ability to taste and respond to visual and aural cues; must be able to verbally communicate with employees and guest at all times.
    • Lifting requirements range from being able to lift between 10 and 50 lbs more than 50% of the time
