SUMMARY
The Burundi Country Director serves as FH’s Chief Representative in the country.  Provides leadership to and manages all FH programs and staff in Burundi.  Within the framework of FH’s Vision and Mission, the primary result of his/her work is to be progress towards achieving FH’s global strategy, Envision 2020, and its targets within the country. Burundi is an exciting program with a unique opportunity to showcase the best of traditional developmental approaches along with a new private sector focus. The Country Director will be a proactive self-starter who is able to understand and engage with the government at all levels positioning our organization for growth while minimizing potential risk. Excited by the opportunities that exist in the confluence of public and private sectors the Country Director will be  setting the vision and working with a team to achieve it.  and thriving in networking to share the vision of our work.

The Burundi Country Director position is located in Bujumbura, Burundi and is an accompanied position.  The Burundi Country Director will travel frequently to project sites and internationally as needed to attend meetings, up to 30% of their time. The Country Director will be a fluent French and English speaker.

Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Key Result #1 –Oversee and manage high quality programs and provide timely and accurate status and financial reporting (40%)
 

  1. Manages, oversees, and is ultimately responsible for the financial and administrative activity of all FH programs within his/her jurisdiction and provides reports in accordance with FH procedures and standards.
  2. Ensures close collaboration between business units through regular planning and performance meetings and reporting, especially focused on the link between program performance and the financial situation of the organization.
  3. Identifies and secures the appropriate resources (personnel, funds, and materials) needed to accomplish the Field strategy through Field, National Organizations, and other donor contacts.4. Leads his/her Field staff in the development and implementation of overall Field and specific program strategies to achieve FH vision and mission, leads staff in the monitoring and evaluation of programs, and provides timely communication and reporting of the same. Specifically, he/she will ensure that FH Burundi programs are integrated and are in compliance with CFCT (Child Focused Community Development) program standards.
  4. Gives careful attention to all legal requirements affecting FH's position in the country, and promptly notifies FH Global Services of any problem or change affecting FH operations.

Key Result #2 – Staff management and development (20%)

  1. Ensures the proper recruitment, orientation, training, development, and care of all FH staff assigned to the Field.
  2. Models leadership to all staff and intentionally develops the leadership potential of key staff in the field. Walks closely with the senior leadership team, coaching and mentoring key direct reports such as the Program Director.
  3. Demonstrates, motivates, monitors and evaluates an understanding of and commitment to FH’s Vision and Mission.
  4. Keeps abreast of environmental, economic, social, political and religious conditions in the Field and reports on such conditions as needed.
  5. Represents FH as “Chief of Mission” at official functions, and as necessary, speaks on behalf of FH, always in accordance with stated FH positions.

Key Result #3 – Strategy and Resource Development (40%)

  1. Ensures that the country strategy is in close alignment with the regional strategy and is contributing significantly to the global targets set out in Envision 2020. The Country Director is also responsible to ensure that resources are raised to achieve the strategy (both FH national office funding, private funding and public funding) in coordination with the regional office and global technical and resource development teams
  2. Identifies, establishes and maintains relationships with Key Field Partners related directly or indirectly to overall Field and specific program strategies in order to achieve the FH Vision and Mission, specifically donor organizations and implementing partners.
  3. Identifies, establishes and maintains relationships with Regional Leadership, National Organizations, and the Global Leadership Team who become part of the overall Field and specific program strategies.

  • Ability to sit at a computer for 8 hours a day doing repetitive motions on a keyboard
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to travel (to project sites and internationally) up to 30% a year
  • Able to multi-task and resolve conflicts

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 
Masters degree in Business Administration from  a College or University or a Masters Degree related to international relief and development preferred.  Must have at least 5 years overseas management experience in senior positions managing complex and multi-sector programs and strong expertise and experience in managing complex, virtual, intercultural teams; or a combination of the above with a significant focus on experiential. Previous Burundi experience is highly desirable.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   The Burundi Country Director supervises all field staff.

 
LANGUAGE SKILLS  
Proficiency and fluency in spoken and written English and French  Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journal, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
