PRIMARY FUNCTION: To inspect, replace, repair, install, adjust, and maintain all mechanical equipment in a major producing unit or assigned area.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Drill press, power saw, chain fall, burning and welding equipment, portable drill and grinder, wrenches, bars, sledge hammer, small forklifts, miscellaneous hand tools and measuring devices, etc.

MATERIALS HANDLED: Plant mechanical equipment, repair parts, lubricants, hardware, packing, miscellaneous stores materials, etc.

SOURCE OF SUPERVISION: Maintenance Supervisor

DIRECTION EXERCISED: Millwright Apprentices, Millwright B, Millwright C.

WORKING PROCEDURE: 1. Receives instructions covering the scheduled and emergency repair, installation, and inspection work to be done.

2. Inspects plant equipment for defects, such as, misalignment, wear, insufficient lubrication, etc.

3. Determines the best way of making repairs to minimize interruption of production.

4. Advises when immediate shut-down of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporarily continued operation will have no harmful effect.

5. Dismantles, cleans, repairs, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles, and lubricates mechanical equipment.

6. Adjusts equipment for proper operating characteristics.

7. Makes either temporary or permanent repairs.

8. Assembles and aligns gears, bearings, and shafts, involving the application of press, sliding, and running fits.

9. Operates simple machine tools, such as drill press, pipe threading machine, power saw, etc.

10. Babbitts and scrapes bearings as required.

11. Erects scaffolds and performs simple rigging as necessary.

12. Changes, sets up and adjusts equipment as required by current operating conditions.

13. Works with repair crews as directed on emergency breakdowns.

14. Clean up all work areas

15. Performs any other duties assigned by supervisor.

16. Performs all work in a safe and efficient manner and keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition.

High School diploma or G.E.D. and minimum of 3 years of experience as an industrial millwright or maintenance technician and/or successful completion of an apprenticeship program or a vocational course of study related to industrial maintenance at a recognized vocational institution.  Ability to work effectively as part of a maintenance team.
