Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Math Teacher is responsible for supporting our students primarily with increasing their math knowledge and skills to pass the high school equivalency exam and ultimately test into college level courses.  The Math Teacher will work with program colleagues to build relationships with students, hold high expectations for their work and behavior, create and implement the curriculum, assess and track student progress, and hold relentless in the belief that our students can graduate from college.  The Math Teacher will also serve in a mentoring role for a small group of students, with a primary focus on the socio-emotional and personal readiness aspects of college preparation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Curriculum Development

  • Support the ongoing creation of a competency-based curriculum that prepares students for college academically and socially-emotionally;
  • Develop appropriate and rigorous objective-based lessons based on College Bound competencies and benchmarks;
  • Provide differentiated opportunities for learning based on student need.

Teaching and Assessment

  • Execute lessons using research-based best practices that engage and challenge students, both as a group and individually;
  • Provide small group tutoring and instruction as needed;
  • Use assessment daily to determine progress toward the objective(s) and to inform lesson planning and individualized, differentiated instruction;
  • Incorporate identified college behavioral & readiness competencies (social-emotional/life skills) and benchmarks into teaching and interactions as appropriate;
  • Administer and score any standardized assessments according to assessment timeline;
  • Track and update all efforts and student progress using Efforts To Outcomes software, as well as maintaining all other required records.

Mentoring and Case Management

  • Build strong connection and relationships with small caseload of students;
  • Ensure formal bi-weekly check ins with students on caseload using College Bound’s protocol;
  • Set short and long-term goals with students and monitor progress with goals and overall progress in programming;
  • Work to engage students in their education and increase their ambition toward college;
  • Model positive college going and life skills behaviors and help students to overcome academic and social barriers in positive ways.

Learning and Organizational Culture

  • Create a classroom culture that is inviting, safe, supports the academic and social-emotional growth of the students, and highlights college;
  • Participate in required student, team and program meetings, as scheduled and/or needed;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve personal practice, classroom instruction, assessment, and student achievement; as well as to achieve the overall goals and mission of the school and the organization.
  • Participate in relevant required trainings and seek out training opportunities that support professional development outlined in the Individualized Professional Development Plan;
  • Assist in the maintenance of materials, equipment and supplies;
  • Share in all classroom responsibilities:  cleaning room, maintenance of materials, and other general classroom duties;
  • Adhere to all protocols and norms for communication and professional conduct, e.g. Email and Phone Communication Protocol, Communication Norms.
  • Fulfill all outlined and related functions in a professional, timely, and thorough manner.
  • Complete other duties related to this position as assigned by your direct supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the qualifications listed below.  The qualifications listed are considered minimum qualifications, unless noted otherwise.

Education:   Bachelor degree in education or related field required

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience teaching Math at the high school to pre-college level in an urban setting;
  • Experience working with at/proven risk youth and young adults;
  • Knowledge of the Accuplacer exam;
  • Experience building and working with a competency-based curriculum;
  • Proven track record of success in advancing student proficiency in Math and Science;
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of College Bound Dorchester;
  • Highly organized, motivated, and adaptable;
  • Ability to work with a diverse staff and to support a diverse population of students;
  • Self-directed, enthusiastic, reliable, and creative, comfortable working as a team player to develop and enhance the College Connections program;
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook;
  • Experience working with Efforts To Outcomes or other performance data-base to track progress and inform decision making;
  • Ability to travel for field trips within and near the community - valid driver’s license required.

EVALUATION

Formal evaluation once per year by supervisor against standards outlined in evaluation protocol, ongoing informal evaluations, progress toward goals outlined in Individualized Professional Development Plan.
