Job Description

As the Manager of Engineering and Maintenance, you will provide engineering services for design improvements to production equipment and components, in addition to maintaining plant buildings and grounds.  You will oversee the environmental compliance programs and support safety goals and objectives. Working to improve operating efficiencies, reduce down time and improve equipment reliability, you will also coordinate projects and directs daily maintenance and engineering-related activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

1. Provides leadership to the Environmental Engineer, Plant Engineers and Maintenance staff regarding the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the Plant.

 

2. Manages capital and repair projects to support both annual and long-range capital expenditures.  Responsibilities include: contractor selection, adherence to timeline, compliance with all regulatory codes and overall capital budget management.

 

3. Manages general maintenance budget to support identified min/max inventory levels to ensure production is supported and budget is met. 

 

4. Responsible for managing plant shutdown schedules.

 

5. Ability to schedule and complete major projects.

 

6. Provides supervision and support to the Environmental Engineer in handling of the Plant environmental compliance matters, and operation of water treatment, and solid waste disposal systems.  Ensures compliance with all aspects of environmental regulations.

 

7. Assists Plant Engineering and Maintenance personnel with the identification of causes of electrical and mechanical problems and the solution of the problems through adjustments, modifications or the installation of new equipment.

 

8. Coordinates equipment or facility repairs/modifications with Plant Safety Supervisor to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and internal safety practices.  Develops plans for upgrading and modernization of equipment.

 

 

 

9. Enforces standard manning objectives. Develops Succession Plan to ensure depth of bench strength for organization.

 

10. Ensures that Engineering and Maintenance staff promote and maintain positive employee relations, supports all provisions of the Labor Agreement, enforces work rules and regulations, and participates at the Second Step of the grievance procedure while addressing maintenance-related disputes.

 

11. Ability to work with Maintenance Management system software. (Maximo Preferred)

 

12. Schedule and coordinate personnel to meet departmental manpower utilization objectives. Achieves effective communication between production and maintenance personnel.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

1. Directly supervises Environmental Engineer, Plant Engineers and Maintenance Management.  General responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of Engineering and Maintenance–related activities.

 

2. Partners with Human Resources to establish job qualifications to support the selection, orientation and training and development of Engineering and Maintenance employees to support all standards and regulations.

 

3. Review the performance of salaried employees consistent with the company’s Salary Administration Plan.  Establish objectives with the employee at the start of each performance period and complete a Performance Appraisal form at the end.  Review the results of the performance appraisal with employees and establish training and development plans to help them overcome performance deficiencies and/or develop new job skills.

 

4.  In conjunction with Human Resources provides counseling/discipline to close gaps to performance with employees.

 





Skills/Requirements

Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred. Extensive training in areas of machine shop practice, welding procedures, hydraulics, pneumatics, basic electricity, mobile equipment repair, and thorough knowledge of blueprint reading.

 

Seven to ten years experience in project management, plant engineering or plant maintenance within a heavy industry situation; steel mill or foundry experience preferred.  Minimum of three to five years supervisory experience.

 

 

Knowledge of manufacturing processes, EPA regulations, OSHA standards, Clean Air Act, testing procedures and detailed record keeping requirements. 

 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to interpret and present technical data.
