Job Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Human Resources, the Learning and Development Specialist is responsible for leading and executing upon the Learning and Development strategy by assessing training needs and integrating delivery with existing AFL (field and corporate) training programs.   The key areas of focus will include:

  • Lead, develop, support and work on learning and development tactical plans to enhance organizational performance and individual capabilities that align with and reinforce AFL’s values with a focus on leadership, professional skills and Associate engagement;  
  • Lead and operationalize the corporate Performance Development process which ensures that our team members clearly understand what is expected of them and receive meaningful feedback and coaching to achieve both business and professional growth; and
  • Lead, support and participate and contribute to AFL’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy which is focused on fostering an inclusive culture that embraces diversity to spark innovation within our Associates, openness in our thinking to drive better insights, better decisions and ultimately better solutions for clients and (internal/external) customers. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of the L&D infrastructure including needs assessment processes, development of Associate learning and development plans, coordination of training efforts, training design, and implementation of training methods to grow overall organizational capacity and enhance performance;
  • Lead the implementation of competency-based approach to performance and training through the development of curriculum paths for all positions within AFL;
  • Lead the Performance Management program and integration with Associate Training Plans, leadership competencies, etc.;
  • Leverage adult learning principles and best practices to create leading edge approaches to learning incorporating multimedia, blended solutions and experiential learning;
  • Manage the annual training plan and coordinate with business leaders, HR colleagues, external partners, vendors, and other key stakeholders to ensure effective delivery with an eye to maximizing learning return on investment (ROI); 
  • Build and leverage strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, collaborating to ensure high quality deliverables with attention to detail in a timely manner;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a range of reputable training providers in the areas of leadership, management, supervision and other key organizational learning and development priorities;
  • Formulate annual training plan, tracking design, development, and delivery of training across AFL and coordinating deployment efforts; 
  • Provide one-on-one coaching to support leadership development, organizational change and business transformation initiatives;
  • Develop and enhance existing learning toolkits, templates and standards for training including apprenticeship training opportunities;
  • Collaborate to develop, implement and administer LMS, including accountability for content management, vendor relationships, configuration, integration and support for future functionality enhancements;
  • Create and evaluate AFL learning programs to provide insight to succession planning process, critical KPIs and maintain  learning & development records and statistics;  
  • Create clear, concise, accurate and effective storyboards;
  • Research, coordinate applications for and obtain government funding for training;
  • Assist with coordination and development of development programs such New Leader Roundtable, Mentoring Program, Diversity & Inclusion, etc.;
  • Adhere to and promote the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of in an HR or organizational development role, with 3 years focused on design, development or delivery of corporate training; 
  • Demonstrated experience coping effectively with change and manage priorities in a fast-paced, results oriented work environment;
  • Thorough knowledge of modern learning methodologies to recommend effective instructor-led, online and/or blended learning, including elements such as gamification, bite-sized learning, etc;
  • Demonstrated previous experience sourcing, implementing and managing a Learning Management System;  
  • Demonstrated previous experience assessing training requirements, preparing a formal training plan, and measuring learning outcomes; 
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems. Experience with Talent Quest an added bonus; 
  • Exposure to a variety of training design and development tools required including Articulate Storyline and Adobe Suite (Captivate, Premier Pro, Photoshop, Sound Booth, Dreamweaver, Fireworks). Expert proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required and SharePoint an asset; 
  • A proven ability to research best practices in learning, translate them into recommendations and tools, and effectively implement;
  • Excellent facilitation and training skills, with previous experience designing and delivering quality training content. A strong communicator with a proven ability to develop and maintain relationships across multiple business units
  • Knowledge of diversity and inclusivity integration practices;
  • Bilingual French (spoken and written) communication skills an asset;
  • Knowledge of process mapping, process flows, and/or documentation; 
  • CTP, CTDP or CHRP designation considered an asset;
  • Ability to travel up to 30%; and
  • Demonstrate strong mentorship and demonstrated team leadership ability.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment.
  • General hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.  
  • Travel within North America required

  • Bachelor’s Degree Business, Human Resources, Adult Education or related field
