Job Description

TITLE: ESOL Instructor

REPORTS TO: Program Leader, Foundations Pathway, College Connections

POSITION OVERVIEW

College Bound offers four levels of ESOL instruction, ranging from beginner conversational English to advanced writing. The program focuses on two key components: providing written and oral competency skills, as well as financial literacy and employment skills, with the focus of increasing students’ ambition to achieve college graduation. ESOL students are encouraged to transition to our College Connections Foundation and Bridge to College pathways upon completion of the Level 4 ESOL course.

The ESOL instructor is responsible for providing instruction in an effective manner, and in line with the organization’s mission and the objectives of the College Connections Program. In keeping with the program’s curriculum, ESOL instruction will be provided within the framework of eight themes, each of which has been organized to ensure delivery of vocabulary, life skills, grammar, and functional language.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Develop appropriate and rigorous lessons for the ESOL courses described, using program curriculum.

· Use available data to plan lessons and inform decision making.

· Execute lessons using research-based best practices that engage and challenge students.

· Administer and score student assessments according to assessment timeline.

· Maintain current and organized student files.

· Record attendance; make daily phone calls to absent students.

· Track student progress (grades, goals, attendance) and input data into appropriate systems.

· Track and update all efforts and student progress using Efforts To Outcomes software, as well as maintaining all other required records;

· Assign and correct homework, providing useful feedback.

· Participate in mandatory program activities, including attending staff meetings, meetings with direct supervisor, and professional development workshops.

· Participate in relevant required trainings and seek out training opportunities that support professional development outlined in the Individualized Professional Development Plan.

· Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve personal practice, classroom instruction, assessment, and student achievement; as well as to achieve the overall goals and mission of the school and the network.

· Adhere to all protocols and norms for communication and professional conduct, e.g. Email and Phone Communication Protocol, Communication Norms.

· Fulfill all outlined and related functions in a professional, timely, and thorough manner.

· Complete other duties related to this position as assigned by direct supervisor.

EVALUATION

Formal evaluation twice per year by supervisor against standards outlined in evaluation protocol, ongoing informal evaluations, progress toward goals outlined in Individualized Professional Development Plan.

CLASSIFICATION

Full time, Administrative Calendar Year (12 Months) and Non-Exempt

SALARY & HOURS

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Teaching Hours: M-F 8:30 am to 2:00 pm

M/W 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the qualifications listed below. The qualifications listed are considered minimum qualifications, unless noted otherwise.

Education: Degree in education, TESOL, applied linguistics, or related field preferred

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

· Three years’ experience in ESOL instruction.

· Commitment to the mission and vision of College Bound Dorchester.

· Experience with ESOL assessments, including BEST Plus and TABE CLAS-E Reading

· Proven track record of success in advancing student proficiency in English acquisition.

· Highly organized, motivated, and adaptable.

· Knowledge of issues concerning immigrants and strategies to support them.

· Ability to work with a diverse staff and to support a diverse population of students.

· Self-directed, enthusiastic, reliable, and creative, comfortable working as a team player to develop and enhance College Bound Dorchester’s College Connections education program.

· Must function independently and as a member of a team.

· Proficient use of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

· Experience working with performance database preferred.

· Desire to work in a mission driven organization that is undergoing organizational change.

· Ability to take initiative and prioritize work, highly organized.
