The Bioinformatics Engineer Intern will work on a sophisticated bioinformatics software package, written in C++ by scientists who contributed to the Human Genome Project.  The engineer will primarily be tasked with documenting the existing code base, so the ability write in English, and to organize complex writing, is a strict requirement, along with the ability to read and thoroughly understand complex C++ code.  If time and talent allow, the student will also have the opportunity to modify the code, culling dead code from the project, making improvements, adding features, and if possible adding a new search algorithm to the package.





Skills/Requirements

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Read, compile, document and "tinker with" our Biofacet sequence search engine (C++, Linux)
  • Identify and strip dead code
  • Compile and test altered code
  • Implement a new (simple) search algorithm

Work Experience

Typically requires no previous professional experience, although previous internship or other professional work experience is desirable.

Knowledge

  • GPA 3.5 or higher
  • Working towards Computer Science degree (bachelor's or master's)
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to quickly learn C++ (Java a plus)
  • Knowledge of linux shell commands
  • Understanding of complex algorithms and methods (dynamic programming, recursion, sorting/searching, data structures, database theory, etc.)
  • Knowledge of computational biology a plus
  • Knowledge of biochemistry, proteins and DNA sequences a plus

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, modify and write complex code
  • Ability to clearly organize and write thoughts describing complex code and algorithms
  • Self-driven, with an ability to work independently towards a specific goal in a timely fashion
