This is an entry level position which requires professional qualifications. The Associate Engineer, Bioinformatics Specialist will be responsible for “owning” the GQ Life Sciences bioinformatics code base.  This will include reading, documenting, and restructuring, as well as fixing and expanding, all existing code.  The engineer will also be tasked with learning and engaging in standard web development projects, completing assigned tasks such as coding, testing, fixing bugs, etc. using standard concepts and principles. The engineer is expected to learn on the job with the goal of developing very specialized domain and product knowledge along with technical/proprietary skills.

 





Skills/Requirements

Scope

Knowledge: Has a strong foundation in computer science algorithms, along with some grasp of and ability to master bioinformatics search and analysis algorithms.  Has some experience with C++ and Java with an ability to master both programming languages.  Learns to use professional concepts and practices. Applies company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.

Complexity: Analyzes, masters and documents complex bioinformatics code.  Works independently on problems of business-critical scope in bioinformatics, as well as within a team in more traditional web development tasks of limited scope. Builds stable working relationships internally.

        Supervision: Capable of operating independently on bioinformatics projects, while normally receiving detailed         instructions on all web development work.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for completing the assigned tasks – coding, development testing, etc.
  2. Closely guided and mentored by a senior member of the team, but works independently. 
  3. Reads, documents, and restructures existing C++ bioinformatics code base.
  4. Acquires web development practices and skills.
  5. Acquires product and required Technical knowledge to contribute to the product development.
  6. As a developer in an Agile team, needs to make sure that the team succeeds. 

Education

Bachelor's degree required in Computer Science

Work Experience (Indicate the approximate years of relevant work experience necessary for this position)

No previous work experience required.

Knowledge

Strong theoretical Knowledge of Software Engineering/Computer Science, Data Structures, C++ and Java Programming, and Distributed Computing.  Excellent programming and problem solving aptitude.  Exposure to and understanding of bioinformatics algorithms and concepts is a plus, but not required.

Skills and Abilities

Excellent Spoken and Written Communication skills, Independent and aggressive, Fluency in English, Strong Problem Solving aptitude, Good Team Player.
