Overview:

As the leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement, BBYO has been providing leadership development and identity building experiences for over 90 years. With a global presence of over 500 local chapters and membership approaching 20,000 teens, we bring Jewish teens together so they can form powerful, authentic relationships with each other and with inspiring adult role models. Compelling Jewish environments and experiences are created through travel programs, weekend retreats and community-based programs that encourage Jewish teens to feel pride in who they are, in control of their own destiny and a part of something greater than themselves.

Position Summary:

The Director of Communications will strategically manage and craft communications that convey the deep impact of the BBYO teen movement to our member, donor, and alumni base. This role will be instrumental in building momentum and gaining exposure for the organization by actively seeking new ways to communicate our work and results.

Keys to success for this position will be utilizing creativity, imagination, and a strong attention to detail in order to articulate our message and implement a vision with strong communications, marketing, and segmentation knowledge. Reporting to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, the Director will work closely with both marketing and development teams to communicate the energy and impact of the BBYO teen experience in compelling ways, and support fundraisers in their efforts to communicate to donors in a compelling voice and with a storytelling approach.

Responsibilities:    

  • Research, develop, and expand development communications strategies to meet the organization’s goals
  • Actively engage with the development team to assess the need for materials that ‘tell the programmatic story’ of the teen movement as a means to encourage action; develop collateral to align with donor/prospects interests 
  • Develop copy, suggest design, and ensure dissemination of all segmented communications, including regularly occurring messages, special campaigns, events-based communications, and programmatic updates 
  • Collaborate with development team to ‘flag’ major donors/prospects by interest in order to customize the communication strategies 
  • Develop new strategies and communications tactics for engaging young alumni (adults in their 20’s and 30’s) and encouraging participation in events and campaigns 
  • Promote the implementation of a relationship-based/interest-based donor engagement approach, including strategic annual program calendar and data-tracking tools

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years’ experience in the fields of development and/or communications.  Excellent writing and analytical skills are required, and a writing sample is suggested with resume and cover letter. 

Depth of experience and confidence befitting a strategic communications position; strategic thinking and planning; exceptional communications skills and presence at all levels and for all audiences; strong interpersonal skills; and drive to achieve results in a metrics-driven organizational culture are critical.? An entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and willingness to take risks and be creative are important attributes of an ideal candidate.

Knowledge of BBYO and/or the Jewish community is preferred. Travel approximately 10% of time is required.
