Job Responsibilities:

As a critical member of Abiomed’s leadership team, the Director of Government Relations is a leading customer interface role with key agencies such as CMS, HHS, MDIC, Clinical societies such as ACC and SCAI, and DC based industry organizations such as Advamed and MDMA.  This individual is responsible for participating in committees, establishing a strategic plan by agency and facilitating cross functional communication to achieve regulatory and reimbursement goals.  Focus will remain on our award winning Impella product line which is the market share leader in percutaneous heart pumps and has been growing at double digit rates for over 5 years.  Priorities include 1) presentation of scientific and clinical data; 2) Expanding patient access through awareness on Capitol Hill; 3) building clinical and financial messaging targeted towards these audiences 4) organizing internal operating mechanisms to optimize communication into Washington DC and future global markets as required.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Educate and present to government customers as an established expert in advanced cardiac treatment and patient advocate
  • Liaison to lobbying activity with key government institutions in Washington D.C. and state level governments on behalf of mechanical cardiac assist technology.
  • Support patient advocacy initiatives in Washington DC and broader Congressional awareness campaigns.
  • Work directly with Health & Human Services and U.S. Medicare Program to address hospital reimbursement topic including rates and coverage decisions.
  • Expand patient access to the therapy and launch formal programs post regulatory approval in the U.S.
  • Participate in critical committees in Advamed, MDMA, MDIC and other relevant organizations as the voice of advanced cardiac technology and patient access.  
  • Work closely with appropriate clinical societies including SCAI, ACC, STS and Heart Rhythm Society.  




Skills/Requirements

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science and Masters degree required, MD, PhD preferred
  • 5+ years government affairs, public relations, and healthcare marketing experience in a medical company (cardiovascular, Class III device experience a plus)
  • 10+ years overall experience in the healthcare setting within device/pharma industry or hospital setting
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical and business strategy skills
  • Ability to set direction in highly dynamic environment
  • Self-reliant; takes initiative; results-oriented, open minded
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally approximately 30% of the time
