About the Position:


This appointment is funded by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Research Participation Program
This Post-Doctoral Candidate will work with the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems’ Building Energy Efficiency Group to contribute to its building science activities. This is an opportunity to work with one of the world's leading research groups to analyze the performance of advanced building enclosure systems. You’ll support a dynamic team based in Boston, Massachusetts working on advanced building enclosure technologies. This post doctoral position has a 12 month term.

Prerequisites:
Ph.D. in mechanical, architectural, civil engineering, physics or computer science with a strong background in programming, building science, and thermal analysis.
 

About Fraunhofer CSE:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) in Boston, MA is part of Fraunhofer USA, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit contract R&D organization, affiliated with Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Europe's largest contract R&D group. Fraunhofer CSE's interdisciplinary R&D team is dedicated to serving the applied research needs of the sustainable energy industry, helping established industry players and startup companies alike develop clean energy technologies from the laboratory to the production line.  The Center has active development projects in the areas of energy efficient building technology,  photovoltaic module technologies, and grid impact of renewable energy technologies.


Principal Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:

  • Work in a team on numerical analysis of high performance building enclosure systems and materials
  • Develop and experimentally validate numerical algorithms for analysis of complex building envelopes and whole buildings
  • Participation in project’s technical reports and groups’ research publications
  • Participate in laboratory and field experiments with use of innovative building enclosure systems and materials
  • Assist with data analysis including determination of heat flows, temperature profiles, energy consumption, moisture content, and thermal comfort conditions

 

Desired Experience and Education:

  • Doctoral degree and an excellent academic record in a relevant discipline (e.g., Building Science, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering)
  • Experience in building science projects; in particular, excellent understanding of thermal and hygrothermal processes within building envelope components
  • Preferred experience in thermal/CFD numerical analysis of building envelope components
  • Programming skills and experience in development of thermal and energy models of building components and whole buildings are required
  • Preferred excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to accept a high degree of responsibility in a team-based organization, combined with ability to work independently
  • Going the extra mile to support the team’s research projects

Must be a U.S. citizen, have Permanent Resident (Green Card) status or be eligible for an Exchange Visitor (J) Visa, if a foreign national.
