Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Legacy Giving (DLG) is responsible for development and execution of a comprehensive program to encourage planned and legacy giving with the goal of assisting donors in maximizing philanthropic support for the St. Louis Symphony. In collaboration with the Vice President for Development and the Development team, the DLG manages execution of the overall strategy to promote, educate and advance the use of planned giving to assist donors in creating Legacy support for the future. The DLG ensures integration of all cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities and coordinates a strategic engagement of key staff and volunteers in a systematic and focused program. The Director of Legacy Giving will be individually responsible for managing a portfolio of major gift / planned gift contributors and will partner with key staff and volunteers in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and leadership level prospects and contributors.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

1. Direct overall Legacy gifts management and organization including pipelines, prospect tracking, solicitation priorities, task assignment and timeline management.

2. Coordinate with Development Operations and Research team to manage research, prospect rating and screening and plans for cultivation and solicitation.

3. Interact with and involve Vice President for Development, President & CEO, Senior Director of Individual & Leadership Giving, Campaign Leadership, and volunteers and senior development colleagues, staff and musicians in cultivation and solicitation program.

4. Identify, track, and leverage board linkages to individual prospects and those individuals who have influence within the community. Create volunteer solicitor / advisory materials to assist in planned gift identification and administration.

5. Coordinate with Manager of Donor Relations regarding stewardship activities and priorities.

6. Coordinate with Development Operations to review and oversee all donor gift and pledge acknowledgements, pledge reminders and gift agreements and reports.

7. Work closely with the Vice Presidents and Senior Directors to ensure collaboration and communication throughout the organization.

8. In concert with Vice President of Development and Senior Directors, coordinate and supervise the activities of any assigned support staff including Development Officers, Manager of Donor Relations and Prospect Research and Donor Communications, and all consultant positions working with the Legacy gifts program.

9. Serve as staff liaison for Capital Campaign Committees, as assigned.

10. Evening and weekend work required periodically, involving concerts and donor events.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.





Skills/Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree required; graduate degree a plus.

• 7+ years in Development with at least three years of direct major and planned gift experience. Experience in non-profit fundraising, with direct responsibility for comprehensive annual and capital development programs. Experience with a cultural or community organization is desirable.

• Familiarity with charitable giving instruments, trusts and current tax laws governing charitable giving.

• Demonstrated success managing a portfolio of major individual prospects through the process of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. A measureable record of accomplishment with six and seven figure solicitations.

• Demonstrated success working in a team environment, including previous supervisory experience.

• Proven track record of creating and executing strategic development plans and programs that maximum support.

• Demonstrated proficiency in computer software programs. The ideal candidate will have experience with fundraising databases in a PC environment. Skills and Abilities:

• Must be able to problem solve at a high level in working with trustees, volunteers, major donors, and Managers working with donors.

• The ability to achieve and deliver in a fast-paced, demanding environment, where attention to detail is paramount.

• Success in this role requires someone who is imaginative, highly self-motivated and who can work in a self-directed manner.

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills – must have the ability to generate ideas which generate increased support.

• Superior interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
