Job Description

The Head of Research will be accountable for the Research activities of Abiomed, excluding engineering and product development activities.  This person will develop and execute a scientifically sound research and publication roadmap for the future of Abiomed.

This person will provide relevant medical expertise in the areas of Cardiovascular Medicine as relates to the Abiomed product portfolio.  This person will be highly autonomous and will quickly come up to speed on the strategy of Abiomed and function of the Medical Office.  They will serve as a primary interface between the Medical Office and other internal functions as well as external stakeholders.  They will serve as backup to the Chief Medical Officer.  

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Primarily accountable for the Research plan and budget for Abiomed
  • Develop all necessary external relationships required to execute the Research plan
  • Develop the organizational structure required to execute the plan.
  • Serve as a backup to the Chief Medical Officer with respect to internally and externally facing activities including interfacing with the external medical and scientific community
  • This person will develop strategies that incorporate use of non-traditional data sources such as registries and real world data as part of the overall plan.
  • Interface with clinical operations to ensure proper oversight / monitoring of Abiomed sponsored clinical trials
  • Interface with the Abiomed publications team to ensure a robust strategy to communicate Research results
  • Other duties as assigned.




Skills/Requirements

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Required MD degree or equivalent with post-graduate training resulting in eligibility for United States Medical Board certification, preferably cardiology.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in clinical medicine, preferably interventional cardiology practice
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a medical device or pharmaceutical organization, preferably medical affairs, clinical research, or pharmacovigilance
  • Expertise and demonstrated success in leading a Research team and efforts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills, formal training in epidemiology and/or statistics preferred
  • Experience working with senior executives and Board of Directors
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in both a direct reporting and matrix environment
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills
  • Ability to make critical business decisions and manage competing stakeholder expectations
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. (#LI-BM1)

Scope:

Responsibility for developing and executing the overall Research strategy and plan for Abiomed.  Key member of the CMO leadership team and Medical Office. Develops methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people. Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of research and medicine as well as applicable regulations.
