Job Description

As a Sustaining Mechanical Engineer you will conduct failure analysis, develop/implement product improvements, and provide engineering support to existing product lines.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determine root causes of external and internal product failures by analyzing field data, testing and inspecting returned product, and reviewing case notes with Abiomed field representatives
  • Address field complaints by determining root cause and implement corrective actions under direction of senior staff
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, vibration and thermal analyses under direct supervision and guidance to support and improve existing products
  • Contribute to test methods and conduct characterization and engineering pre-verification testing
  • Assist in writing test protocols and reports for process/design changes on existing product lines
  • Document design changes by constructing solid models and drawings with SolidWorks using GD&T and stack-up analyses
  • Fabricate prototypes with assistance from technical support team (Machine shop, Technicians and Designers)
  • Support sustaining engineering efforts, in close team work with the Supplier and Manufacturing Engineering groups, by timely disposition of non-conforming material and resolve production issues with internal and external manufacturing partners

JOB QUALIIFCIATOINS:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or directly related scientific discipline, MS desired
  • 5 years of related work experience desired. Medical device experience preferred
  • Must have expertise and Engineering CAD software such as SolidWorks
  • Expertise in FEA and analytical software such as ANSYS Mechanical, MathCad, MiniTab & Matlab desired
  • Knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes such as injection molding, extrusion, fabrication, etc.
  • Knowledge of lean, six sigma, kaizen, and continuous improvement initiatives desired. Green Belt preferred.
  • Familiar with project management terms and concepts
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively and frequently (oral and written)
  • Execute tasks in a timely manner without direction supervision
  • Able to prioritize tasks
  • Must be Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • May require up to 10% travel – US & EU
