Job Description

Overview:

BBYO is the leading pluralistic, Jewish teen movement providing exceptional leadership programs and identity enrichment experiences for over 90 years.  We offer year-round activities in hundreds of communities throughout North America and world-wide travel opportunities through BBYO Passport enabling teens to explore areas of leadership, service, civic engagement, Israel awareness and Jewish values.

Position Summary:

The Director of Donor Communications will communicate BBYO’s many programmatic accomplishments in a compelling way to targeted audiences of existing major donors and prospects, including:  parents; alumni; friends; and foundations.

Embedded within BBYO’s Program Team and reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Director will work closely with BBYO’s Development and Marketing Teams to support the organization’s front-line fundraisers at engaging new donors and upgrading existing donors through sharing the energy and impact of the BBYO teen experience.  The position leverages BBYO’s programmatic vibrancy to build and deepen relationships within the philanthropic community.

For example, the Director will develop customized communications to be shared with philanthropists, including members of BBYO’s Honor Society – and utilized by the front-line fundraisers – based on specific program topics and headlines, using email, social media, and hard-copy materials. S/he will coordinate a major donor/prospect event that brings philanthropists to BBYO’s annual International Convention to meet the teens and see the BBYO program in action.

The Director will support BBYO’s fundraisers, equipping them with the resources needed to make major gift solicitations, such as template and customized proposals as well as a menu of programmatic giving opportunities.  The Director will also manage a portfolio of foundations to steward and increase giving, while recruiting new foundations to participate in the organization’s annual campaign.  Success will be measured by growth in BBYO’s annual campaign – particularly among foundations and major gift upgrades/new gifts with a programmatic focus.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with staff and teens across the organization to track key programmatic achievements
  • Determine strategies to share key programmatic achievements with targeted donor/prospect constituencies
  • Establish and implement strategy to engage members of BBYO’s Honor Society
  • Systematize stewardship plan for all major donors and prospects in coordination with major gifts team
  • Implement copy, suggest design and layout, and ensure dissemination of all segmented donor/prospect communications – including regularly occurring messages, special campaigns, events-based communications and programmatic updates
  • Engage with BBYO’s front-line fundraisers to assess their need for materials that ‘tell the programmatic story’ of the teen movement as a means to encourage giving
  • Develop a menu of targeted giving opportunities in priority program areas, including: service/advocacy, Israel, Jewish learning and leadership
  • Prepare template and customized proposals on priority program topics at the request of donors, prospects and/or BBYO’s front-line fundraisers
  • Manage a portfolio of philanthropic foundations to upgrade renewals and identify new funding opportunities
  • Collaborate with Development Team to ‘flag’ major donors/prospects by interest in order to customize the solicitation and communication strategy for each
  • Develop fundraising collateral and messaging to align with donor/prospects interests
  • Coordinate implementation and project-management for donor/prospect gathering at BBYO’s annual International Convention
  • Engage young BBYO alumni (adults in their 20’s and 30’s) in scholarship campaign to enable teens of all socioeconomic backgrounds to attend International Convention
  • Identify local programmatic opportunities/teen events to engage major donors/prospects (for example: a service day or leadership training experience)
  • Promote the implementation of a relationship-based/interest-based donor engagement approach, including strategic annual program calendar and data-tracking tools

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the fields of development and/or marketing/communications.  Excellent writing skills are required.

The successful professional will be stellar at building relationships and working across institutional departments to mobilize people and drive results.  Demonstrated ability to effectively multitask under deadline and manage projects through a remote workforce required.  Basic familiarity with social media and an understanding of how to win the attention of major donors using digital technologies is helpful.  Knowledge of BBYO and/or the Jewish community is preferred.

The Director bears responsibility for gathering and sharing programmatic highlights – as well as packaging program concepts in a dynamic way – to grow the annual campaign.  Strategic thinking and planning; ability to connect the dots; strong interpersonal skills; and drive to achieve results in a metric-driven organizational culture are critical.

This position recognizes that key constituents need to hear more about BBYO’s powerful work with teens, and that the programs happening at every level of the organization hold significant potential as a donor engagement strategy.  An entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and willingness to take risks and be creative are important attributes of the ideal candidate.

Travel approximately 10% of time is required.

A competitive benefits package is available including health insurance, paid time off and a retirement savings plan.
