About the Position:


The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Member of Technical Staff – Software Development Engineer to join its Distributed Electrical Energy Systems Group. This is an opportunity to lead software development for CSE’s R&D activities while working with one of the world’s leading research organizations. Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead design and implementation of software for real-time monitoring and control of energy resources (e.g., solar PV, energy storage, home energy management systems, and building energy management systems)
  • Analyze real-world energy systems and business processes, and develop data structures and process models to represent them in software
  • Develop software architectures for a variety of embedded software and web-based data management platforms
  • Implement a variety of communication protocols with hardware and web based servers (TCP/IP, modbus, serial, analog)
  • Implement user interfaces and smart phone apps (e.g., iPhone, Android)
  • Support development of LabView-based hardware testing software


Required Experience:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or relevant field with 5+ years of post-graduate experience
  • Experience managing multi-user software development projects
  • Have served as a project lead for, and successfully delivered, integrated software and hardware product(s)
  • Excellent grasp of Object-Oriented Design, systems architecture, and other fundamental computer science concepts
  • Mastery of the tools of the trade, including a variety of modern programming languages (Java, JavaScript, C/C++, Objective C) and open-source technologies
  • Development experience writing applications for a mobile platform (Android, iOS, etc.)
  • Experience with designing data structures and data bases
  • Experience developing software with best practices in a collaborative environment (design, documentation, version control, etc).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with database design concepts, and web-based application frameworks such as Sharepoint
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the tradeoffs associated with different choices of programming languages and toolsets
  • Familiarity with a suite of consumer- and industrial-grade communications protocolsPassion for renewable grid integration and smart grid deployment
  • Skilled oral and written communicator
  • Effectively collaborates in a team environment
  • Creative, self-driven individual with a desire to expand capabilities, ability to quickly learn and adapt new skills
