Member of Technical Staff – Electrical Systems Integration & Testing

About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Member of Technical Staff – Electrical Systems Integration & Testing to join its Distributed Electrical Energy Systems Group. We are currently developing technology that will revolutionize the solar industry by using technology to simplify and de-risk the installation and operation of solar PV systems.  This is an opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading research organizations. Principal Responsibilities:

  • Support development and deployment of novel pilot-scale PV and energy storage systems for residential and light commercial PV applications
  • Design and execute experiments and test protocols to characterize the performance of renewable energy technologies and energy storage
  • Manage complex projects with external and internal team members
  • Design, layout, and test prototype PCBs with microcontrollers, digital and analog I/O, and communications interfaces
  • Develop conceptual design and specifications for custom enclosures and cable assemblies
  • Support software development of an integrated energy system control platform
  • Develop electrical and mechanical specifications & designs for fabrication by 3rd party vendors

Required Experience:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or relevant field with 4-6 years of relevant experience
  • Hands-on expertise designing, integrating, and packaging digital and analog electronics
  • At least 3 years experience troubleshooting, field testing, and documenting performance of electrical systems, digital and analog electronics and multi-kW power systems, using standard laboratory measurement equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with multiple team members and project partners




Skills/Requirements

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experienced with circuit design, PCB fabrication, and functional test
  • Experience with development of thermal management and packaging of electronics for outdoor applications
  • Experience with mechanical design and drafting software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc)
  • Familiar with industry-standard communications protocols and methods (ModBus, CAN, SCADA)
  • Ability to program data acquisition systems, for example, using LabView
  • Working knowledge of standard laboratory & field test equipment, such as oscilloscope, power quality analyzers, soldering
  • Embedded programming experience is a plus (e.g., Python, C/C++, etc)
  • Working knowledege of basic machine shop equipment (drill press, table saw, etc)
  • Experience managing projects in small teams
  • Effectively collaborates in a team environment
  • Effective oral and written communicator
