Job Description
  • Routine Manufacturer and customer maintenance and installation including Ethernet, and optical equipment.
  • Fiber cleaning, placement and management (OC 12, 48, 192, LC/LC and SC/SC connector)
  • Testing systems using various test sets from DS1 to DS3, as well as OC-3, 12, 48, 192, and 10Gige to 40gig optical circuits.
  • Experience using an OTDR.
  • Circuit pack changes and upgrades
  • Working with and taking direction from the customer’s NOC
  • Perform minor installations and upgrades to the network
  • Installation of DS-3 cables and terminations
  • Perform routine maintenance as requested by the customer




Skills/Requirements
  • This is an ON CALL position
  • Tech must be available 365/24/7
  • Use of personal vehicle with expense paid for use
  • Basic personal hand tools (additional tools will be provided by ALTA as required

Education Requirements: (High School Diploma, College, Technical/Vocational Schools, Certifications etc.

  • Grade 12 graduate
  • Certification on various equipment an asset (Huawei, Nortel, Infinera, Cisco, ADVA, etc;)

Experience/Skills Required: (Years of experience, Telcordia Skill Level, AT&T, multi-lingual specific experience etc.)

  • Minimum 10 years working experience in Central Office (CO) environment
  • Maintenance experience on transport switching equipment
  • Equipment installation experience
  • Test and turn up of CO equipment
  • Ethernet 10Ge/1Ge, coaxial, fiber, DSX, DS3 x-connect panels
  • Digital Signal hierarchy and theory- DS1, DS3, STS1, SONET DWDM
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and especially Excel
  • Transport- network installation, augments, maintenance and preventative maintenance
  • Experience in AT&T facilities would be beneficial
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish customer relations
  • Self-starter and able to work independently under limited supervision

Physical Requirements: (lifting, standing, sitting environmental factors, visual acuity, color perception, manual dexterity etc.)

  • Be able to lift 70 pounds
  • Stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Climb step ladders to a height of 12 feet

Additional Requirements:

  •        Install, power up, and test media converters, routers and switches both at central office and at customer locations
  •        Install, test, turn up and repair ADSL, PRI, DS1, DS3, OC3 OC12, OC48, OC192, OC768, 10ME, 100ME, 1GE, 10GE and 100GE & DWDM
  •        Responsible for DC Power installation and repair.
  •        Familiarity with 5ESS and DMS/CS2K switching is an asset.
  •        Must learn and familiarize TELUS proprietary applications like AWAS, CV, NPi and  all other troubleshooting applications like Preside etc
  •        Familiar with Fiber Optic testing (OTDR, power meter) 
  •        24/7 On-Call every other week.
  •        Available for any scheduled cut over or outage situations
  •        Strong computer skills MS Office suite , Excel, Word, assets would be Nutcracker and SAP.
