POSITION SUMMARY The Education Programs Manager is responsible for creating, overseeing, and implementing the wide-ranging educational initiatives of the St. Louis Symphony making these programs an integrated part of the mission and offerings of the STL Symphony. Uses creativity and innovation to evolve current programs and develop new ones according to the needs of the organization and the local community. Under general direction, performs a wide variety of duties associated with directing, coordinating and implementing all educational exposure, sequential concerts and events, related professional development for symphony musicians and teachers, as well as education based relationships. Represents the External Affairs Department in public venues and at community partner organizational meetings. Reports to the Vice President for External Affairs as a team member of the External Affairs Department while also maintaining a highly collaborative relationship with the Artistic Administrator, Assistant/Resident Conductor, and other STL Symphony staff and volunteers. FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB 1. Plans, programs, scripts, and directs STL Symphony Education Concerts and Family Concert Series, including visual enhancements and hiring and management of guest artists with the assistance of Resident or Guest Conductor and the Vice President of Artistic Planning. 2. Produces Educational Materials for KK’s, YPC’s, YAC’s, and In-School presentations for distribution and web-site listing. 3. Established and maintains relationships with local arts organizations, creating opportunities for collaboration. 4. Coordinates with schools (music/fine arts supervisors, principals, classroom and music teachers) to create and schedule meaningful education activities in schools, increasing the exposure and appreciation of the Saint Louis Symphony and music. 5. Plans, schedules, communicates details of, and hires musicians for linked residency visits in the Adopt-a-School Program, Symphony in Your School Program, and other special education events with teachers and STL Symphony musicians. 6. Plans, directs, and implements Professional Development sessions for local teachers in Powell Hall and at the request of other organizations. 7. Supervises the half-time Secondary Education Programs Coordinator and temporary Education Interns. 8. Supervises the Resident Musicians as part of the Education Program. 9. Plans and manages the Education Programs budget together with the Vice President for External Affairs. 10. Attends In-School visits as needed to build relationships and ensure proper environment for musicians and students. 11. Contributes ideas and writes articles to promote STL Symphony Educational Initiatives in Symphony publications and other community publications. 12. Manages planning sessions for Education programs with STL Symphony Musicians and Classroom/Music Teachers in preparation for Education classes and events. 13. With the Director of Volunteer Activities, develops plan for alignment of Volunteer Association Education Programs with the mission/focus of the CP Programs. 14. Responds to inquiries and requests from the educational community at large, creating alliances and collaborations as needed. 15. Oversees plans, materials, events, and schedules for LinkUp Concerts and rehearsals. 16. Works with the External Affairs and Marketing Departments to produce materials for Education publicity, Education Concert Brochures, newsletters, and other literature. 17. Working with the Marketing Department, sets and reaches goals for Education and Family concert ticket sales. 18. Assists the Marketing Department with maintenance and updating the Education sections of the STL Symphony website 19. Coordinates production and distribution of web-based STL Symphony distance-learning programs. 20. Assists the Development Department with grant applications, preparation of materials and maintaining relationships with funders or donors. 21. Manages the evaluation of education programs and feed-back sessions/focus groups for education concerts, in-school programs, and other programs as appropriate. 22. Maintains and updates the CP database for education events for current and past years, including creation and generation of CP event reports. 23. Serves as liaison between Missouri and Illinois schools as well as the various constituents of the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative and the STL Symphony in publicity and good will activities while enhancing community initiatives set forth by the External Affairs Department. 24. Oversees STL Symphony participation in E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative Showcases and other annual events. 25. Attends department and organization meetings including External Affairs Dept. meetings, E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative District Coordinators meetings, STL Symphony Staff Meetings, CP Task Force, and SVA Committee meetings.





Skills/Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Knowledge: Prefer a candidate with a degree in Music or Arts Administration and thorough knowledge of orchestral music. Requires broad knowledge of a discipline involving extensive theoretical knowledge. Understanding of public/private school structures and knowledge of music and music education is a must. Proficient knowledge of the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and PageMaker or Publisher. Experience: Minimum 3 years in music education-related activities to obtain sufficient background to perform duties of the position. Classroom experience and knowledge of the orchestral repertoire highly desired. Demonstrated experience managing and coordinating multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Skills and Ability: 1. Ability to think creatively and collaboratively regarding the long range plans of the programs. 2. Ability to apply principles to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables. 3. Ability to plan and arrange a significant portion of own work, referring only unusual cases to supervisor or others. 4. Possess strong organizational skills, time management skills, problem solving skills and an intense attention to detail. 5. Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating with internal and external contacts in a manner using considerable tact required to achieve results without friction. 6. Ability to achieve goals and meet deadlines in an environment with distractions. 7. Ability to work within budgetary constraints. 8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 9. Ability to work independently as well as a willingness to be a team player in a highly collaborative environment.
