The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead complex technical tasks and engineering process improvements, provide direction to senior and junior staff, develop new products and provide engineering support for existing products.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform mechanical, fluid, vibration, thermal, reliability magnetic and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
Fabricate prototypes with assistance from junior staff, technical support team (Machine Shop, Technicians and Designers) and suppliers
Work with internal and external manufacturing partners to ensure producible designs (DFM)
Develop test methods and conduct characterization and engineering pre-verification testing
Write test protocols and reports.
Document designs by constructing solid models and drawings with ProE using GD&T and stack-up analyses
Address field complaints by determining root cause and implement corrective actions
Support sustaining engineering efforts by the timely disposition of non-conforming material and resolve producibility issues with internal and external manufacturing partners
Identify and establish new approaches and procedures
Perform design trade studies and define system architectures
Manage self and junior staff for timely completion of tasks per plan without direct supervision
Prepare design reviews and present to peers and review team
Establish design goals and specifications for product development efforts
Create work breakdown structures and project plans using Microsoft Project
Chair project team meetings and provide technical direction
Meet budget and scheduled targets
Determine critical path for area of project responsibility
Suggest, contribute and champion initiatives to improve the Engineering Department’s operations and procedures.
Champion selection, own and support engineering software
Skills/Requirements
Job Qualifications:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or directly related scientific discipline, MS Preferred.
12 years of related experience in mechanical engineering; Medical Device experience preferred.
Must have expertise with Engineering CAD software such as ProEngineer
Must have expertise in FEA and analytical software such as MathCad, MiniTab & Matlab
Six Sigma and/or Design for Six Sigma; Green Belt Preferred.
Must have expertise with applicable manufacturing processes such as injection molding, extrusion and fabrication.
Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively and frequently (oral and written)
Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Ability to act independently to determine methods and procedures.
Must be proficient Microsoft Office Suite. Working knowledge of SAP desired.
May require up to 10% travel – US & EU
