Member of Technical Staff – Electrical Systems Engineer

About the Position:

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Member of Technical Staff – Electrical Systems Engineer to join its Distributed Electrical Energy Systems Group. This is an opportunity to shape the research focus for CSE’s Distributed Electrical Energy Systems R&D group while working with one of the world’s leading research organizations. You'll be a key part of a dynamic team that shares a commitment to engineering excellence, combined with an excitement about sustainable energy technology.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of a hardware-in-the loop microgrid test platfor
  • Lead and contribute to proposals to develop, test, and evaluate the performance of novel power conversion, generation, and control technologies.
  • Develop an integrated PV, demand response, and storage system for residential applications
  • Hands-on testing and integration of power electronics and controls for grid-connected renewables and smart grid applications
  • Perform power systems simulation and modeling for static, dynamic, and transient electrical systems

Required Experience:

  • Have served as a project lead for, and successfully delivered, integrated hardware and software product(s)
  • Track record of having won competitive research grants
  • Hands-on expertise conducting hardware-in-the-loop and/or field testing and charaterization of power electronic systems
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in a professional role in:
  • Power conversion
  • Control theory and controls development for distributed systems
  • Instrumentation, testing, & measurement of electronic systems
  • Embedded systems integration
  • Power Flow Analysis
  • Techno-economic analysis of engineering systems
  • Familiarity with communications protocols and methodologies for distributed generation

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or relevant field with 4-6 years of post-graduate experience
  • Multi-disciplinary engineering background and interest, including controls, software, hardware, and mechanical systems
  • Passion for renewable grid integration and smart grid deployment
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, etc), load flow modeling packages (e.g., PSCAD, PowerFactory), and numerical modeling software like MATLAB/Simulink
  • Exposure to applicable renewable and electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, UL, CSE)
  • Skilled oral and written communicator
  • Effectively collaborates in a team environment
  • Creative, self-driven individual with a desire to expand capabilities, ability to quickly learn and adapt new skills
