About the Business Development Manager Role at Fraunhofer CSE:

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Business Development Manager to work with members of the Business Development & Marketing Team, as well as the leaders of the research groups, to grow our contract research business. In this role, you will work to expand networks of industry clients and referral partners while identifying opportunities for expanding client relationships. Ideal candidates for this role will be strong listeners, who can identify and hone in on the specific needs of clients. In addition to strong relationship-building skills, candidates should have experience with technical product management or experience marketing or selling technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Director of Strategy, Center Director, and research group leaders to identify  business development opportunities and prospective clients
• Collaborate in the development of strategic approaches for engaging with identified prospects
• Drive the execution of research group business development plans, including lead generation, tracking, and coordination of BD activities 
• Develop and maintain deep knowledge of our target customers and our market space
• Understand and be able to explain the relationship between market drivers and clients’   business objectives as they relate to value propositions
• Understand at a broad level the research areas of the organization, its core offerings and how these meet the needs of our prospective clients
• Identify opportunities to promote Fraunhofer’s expertise, including evaluating events and speaking opportunities in support of research topics / industries and collaborating with scientists to develop topics and programs
• Attend events and meetings to build a referral network of key clients and partners and promote Fraunhofer’s brand
• Conduct analyses to examine business development performance to determine “what works”
• Facilitate the development of communications (listservs and client alerts) for research groups / industries, alongside Marketing Communications Manager
• Assist in creating BD / Marketing collateral
• Assist with editing proposals, as needed

Required Skills:

• Strong knowledge of relevant existing and new energy technology
• Engineering or technical background
• Strong listener who can identify and hone in on specific needs of clients
• Exceptional planning and organizational skills, including follow through and follow up
• Solid attention to detail ensuring a quality product
• Excellent time management, job management and multi-tasking skills
• Proven ability to build relationships with a wide range of people
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to manage multiple projects and keep them on track and moving forward

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred (MBA, MS)
• At least 3-5 years of business development or product management or marketing experience
