Member of Technical Staff – Power Systems Engineer

About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Member of Technical Staff - Power Systems Engineer to join its Distributed Electrical Energy Systems Group. This is an opportunity to help define and implement the vision for CSE’s newly established Distributed Electrical Energy Systems R&D group while working with one of the world’s leading research organizations. You'll be a key part of a dynamic team that shares a commitment to engineering excellence, combined with an excitement about sustainable energy technology.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on testing and integration of power electronic systems, controls, and data acquisition solutions for grid- connected renewables and smart grid applications
  • Support development, test, and integration of a “Plug & Play” residential PV system
  • Engage in collaborative development across a range of emerging distributed electronic and smart grid technologies, from power electronic sub-systems (e.g., fault detection circuits) to power distribution systems (e.g., microgrids and smart” distribution automation). 
  • Perform power systems simulation and modeling for static, dynamic, and transient electrical system analysis
  • Contribute to proposals to develop, test, and evaluate performance of novel technologies.

Required Experience:

  • Multi-disciplinary engineering background and interest, including controls, software, hardware, and mechanical systems
  • Hands-on experience testing and integrating power electronic systems
  • Working knowledge of real-time embedded control and communications platforms in an embedded Linux environment
  • Expertise in DC-DC or DC-AC converter and controller design, analysis, or testing
  • Experience with circuit modeling software such as PSIM, SPICE, and numerical modeling software like MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Familiarity with utility industry communications protocols (e.g., ModBus, SCADA systems)
  • Exposure to applicable renewable and electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, UL, CSE)
  • Familiarity with power systems modeling and simulation software, such as OpenDSS, PowerFactory, BDEW, or PSCAD

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or relevant field with 1-3 years of relevant experienceCreative, self-driven individual with a desire to expand your capabilities, ability to quickly learn and adapt new skills
  • Passion for solving challenges associated with renewable grid integration and smart grid deployment
  • Skilled oral and written communicator
  • Effectively collaborates in a team environment
