Liberty Healthcare has partnered with the State of California and the Counties of San Bernardino and Riverside to establish Treatment Programs to provide services for Restoration of Competency to individuals found by the courts to be Incompetent to Stand Trial (IST).

The mission of the IST Treatment Program is to minimize the need and waiting periods for State Hospital forensic mental health beds by delivering timely court-mandated forensic assessments, psychiatric stabilization, and restoration of competency to PC 1370 IST individuals in county jails.

Liberty seeks experienced Forensic Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists to evaluate, diagnose and provide therapy to those patient inmates we serve.

Part-time and full-time opportunities available.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate residents for symptoms of mental disorders and behavioral problems, including mental status examination and psychosocial history, and other problems underlying a finding of Incompetent to Stand Trial, and develop multi axis diagnoses as appropriate to practice standards for individual licensing levels.  Evaluate for level of functioning and capabilities in determining treatment intervention approaches.
  • Perform psychosocial evaluations on all admissions within scope of licensure, certification and training.  Administer tests and assessments within scope of licensure, certification and training.
  • Provide individual and group therapy dependent on the needs and abilities of the patient.
  • Coordinate resources, particularly in terms of discharge planning, obtaining reports and information, and follow-up services.
  • Provider cognitive-behavior treatment and psychoeducation to individuals and groups.  Provide clinical support and backup to other clinical staff as needed.  Serve as primary therapist to assigned residents.
  • Contribute to or provide leadership in reviewing and integrating assessment information from multidisciplinary team to guide individualized treatment planning.  Describe residents’ behavioral progress/regression in treatment.
  • Contribute to or take leadership role in staff meetings, case conferences, case presentations, and training activities.
  • Provide training and consultation to treatment and correctional/security staff on clinical methods and procedures for use with residents in forensic and correctional settings.
  • Provide on-call emergency consultation coverage as needed.
  • Refer clients to necessary psychiatric and medical services or other specialized care as needed.
  • Provide court testimony as needed regarding individual resident participation and response to treatment program.
  • Perform administrative duties as a member of the treatment team including discipline specific reports, attending staff meetings, and providing technical assistance.
  • File chart documentation of services in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Ensure accurate court reports meet designated deadlines and are delivered in designated format.
  • Proactively contact family and collateral contacts when appropriate for the purposes of evaluation and treatment.
  • Perform other duties (not outlined above) as assigned.




Skills/Requirements
  • Licensed in California as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Marriage and Family Therapist.
  • Experience working with forensic mental health population. Minimum equivalent of 1-year full time experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of clinical assessments, procedures and methods, as well as mental status examination.
  • Ability to assess treatment goals and write goal-directed, individualized treatment plans, as well as ability to monitor and document behavior patterns and modify plan to meet changing goals.
  • Ability to provide counseling and psychoeducation in individual, group and family modalities.
  • Ability to instruct others in the implementation of psychological and behavioral interventions and procedures.
  • Excellent clinical observation and diagnostic skills as well as excellent listening and verbal skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport and maintain objectivity with a criminal or forensic population.
  • Excellent learning capacity in order to expand current skills/knowledge and to transfer this knowledge to other staff.
  • Commitment to enhancing cultural competency.
