Job Description

AFL, a leading global fiber optics telecommunications company has an immediate opening for an Engineering Manager in Duncan, SC. This individual will lead a high-performing team responsible for the design, development, and technical support of products and advanced manufacturing technologies for the power utility market in the area of transmission line product accessories, substation accessories and overhead fiber optic hardware. This team is responsible for leading projects that launch products and technologies that enable AFL to continue its strong growth in new and existing markets. Moderate travel will be required to assist the sales team with opportunities ranging from new product development, investigative product performance issues, conducting technical presentations, and addressing product qualification requirements. Assignments are broad and complex in nature and scope, which requires considerable knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to make sound independent decisions.

The Engineering Manager will lead the engineering and technical team in development efforts, design engineering, quality systems, product applications, development testing, failure analysis, 3D modeling, technical bid support documentation and product qualifications. This position will support a product line with $90M+in annual revenues involving the following product groups for the power utility market: compression accessories, substation connectors, fiber optic cable hardware, and motion control products.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with management, production, and marketing staff to define project specifications and procedures.
  • Manage and develop the skill set of the engineering team to provide technical support to internal and external customers
  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals while directing the integration of technical activities
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand in order to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Execute and improve tools, systems and metrics to ensure success
  • Direct, review, and approve product designs and changes.
  • Direct activities involving creation of casting tooling for aluminum and bronze parts, machining of aluminum tubing and welding specifications
  • Engage in personnel recruiting, directing and development.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO registration
  • Manage and prioritize requests for development testing for internal and external test labs
  • Manage the test lab and staff to ensure proper testing protocols are following per published test guidelines and specifications
  • Lead efforts to resolve manufacturing upsets, as needed
  • Conduct product failure analysis with professional documentation that brings customer recognition to AFL
  • Ensure the team working within all AFL, EHS, and HR systems, values and goals

 

Skills/Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • 5-8 years of applicable product knowledge to include uses, applications and industry trends
  • 3-5 years Supervisory and/or Management experience
  • 5 or more years experience in an Engineering role (Applications, Product Development or Process) within the power utility transmission distribution market involving motion control, compression accessories or substation design is desired.
  • Professional Engineering Certification is preferred.
  • Ability needed to take commercial input and determine if a new product is needed, if so, assess feasibility, and then execute from Concept through Design, Testing, Industrialization and Commercialization.
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma experience
  • Advanced Computer Skills – Word processing, spreadsheets, database software, SolidWorks
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Highly developed analytical, teambuilding, project management and planning skills
