Job Description:                 RESPIRATORY THERAPIST – PRN LEVEL I


Department:                         Cardiopulmonary Services               


Responsible To:                   Director of Cardiopulmonary & Manager of Respiratory


Education:                            Licensed as a Certified or Registered Therapist by the State of Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance.  BLS required.  ACLS and NRP preferred.


Experience:                           Critical Care experience preferred.


Physical Requirements:      Good physical condition to sit, frequently stand, walk bend/stoop, and squat; occasionally kneel, reach above shoulder level, and balance; must have ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull at least 50 lbs. without assistance, and more than 50 lbs. with assistance; must continually be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate; Exceptional level of energy and vitality. Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.


Environmental Conditions:  Primarily works inside and may experience the following hazards: biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperature extremes.


Occupational Exposure:    Level 1 = Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.




  1. Accurately perform only upon the order of a physician/physician extender and in accordance with the protocols established by the hospital the following: (1) therapeutic and diagnostic use of medical gases and administration apparatus. (2) administration of medications to the cardiopulmonary system, (3) ventilatory support, including the maintenance and management of life support system, (bronchopulmonary drainage and breathing exercises (5) respiratory rehabilitation, (6) assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and (7) maintenance of natural airways.  Based on patient assessment, notifies appropriate Medical Staff of any problems/concerns.
  2. Specific testing techniques shall be understood to include: measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures and flows; specimen collection and analysis of blood for gas transportation and acid/base determination’ physiologic monitoring of cardiopulmonary system (ECG)
  3. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all equipment/functions, maintenance, precautions and hazards of all equipment used, providing necessary support to maintain equipment inventory.
  4. Accurately records necessary information on all patient documents with special attention to accuracy and legibility.  Complies with policies regarding electronic patient documentation and BMV (bedside medication verification) using WOW’s (wireless on wheels) and desktop computers.
  5. Assist physician as necessary to provide support during invasive as well as noninvasive procedures
  6. Participates in hospital education activities by attending in-services, and training necessary to maintain clinical competency.  Utilize downtime to assist other therapist or for continuing education activities.
  7. Work assigned will be primarily on general floors.  Will be required to cover intensive care areas (MICU, SICU, ECC, OHR, MICU) on occasion.
  8. Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director or Manager Cardiopulmonary Services.
