Job Description:                                 RN - Obstetrics

 

Department:                                         Nursing Service

 

Responsible To:                                   Charge Nurse, Nursing Director, and Nursing Supervisor

 

Education/Training:                            BSN preferred. In lieu of BSN, commitment to earn BSN within an established period of time may be required.  OB experience may be considered in lieu of BSN

 

Experience:                                           Medical/Surgical experience may not be required based on current staffing.  Obstetrical experience preferred.

 

Licensure Requirement:                     Must be currently licensed in the state of Florida as a Registered Nurse.  Certification in BLS, Neonatal Resuscitation, ECG interpretation required within 6 months of hire; regular attendance of EFM seminar during employment required; NCC certification in obstetrical or neonatal nursing within two years of hire preferred; knowledge of the psychosocial, physical and emotional needs of the obstetrical, gynecological, pediatric and neonatal patient to be demonstrated by completion of orientation.

 

Physical Requirement:                       Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing; frequent mental/visual strain. Occasional heavy lifting (exerting 50-100 lbs of force up to 1/3 of the time); frequently exerting moderate force (21-50 lbs of force up to 2/3 of the time);  constantly exerting negative force (10-20 lbs of force) to move objects and patients.  Also requires the ability to work in highly stressful situations, to handle all situations with emotional stability and to demonstrate an exceptional level of energy and vitality.

 

Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside and may experience the following hazards:  biological, radiation, stress.

 

Occupational Exposure:                    Category I    Job involves tasks and procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

 

 

Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Identify and document the needs and problems of individual patients utilizing the nursing process.  Determine and document patient and/or family learning needs and identify need for support services.  Channel pertinent information concerning patient care to appropriate party, providing documentation of same.  Provide nursing care in routine and emergency situations in a calm, functional manner.
  2. Investigate patient complaints or dissatisfaction and report to OB charge nurse, Nursing Director and/or Nursing Supervisor.
  3. Implement medical plan of care in compliance with physicians' directives.
  4. Interpret fetal monitor strips; identify both reassuring and non-reassuring patterns; intervene appropriately in the event of a non-reassuring monitor pattern.
  5. Function independently and with expertise to provide nursing management of the obstetrical patient during the ante-partum, labor, delivery, recovery and the post-partum periods as well as to the gynecological, neonatal and pediatric patient.
  6. Function independently as circulator during Cesarean Section, PPBTL and D&C; function independently as assistant to the surgeon during Cesarean Section, PPBTL and D&C; function independently and with expertise during neonatal resuscitation; function independently to assist the physician with stabilization of the sick neonate; function within the limits of the state Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies, procedures and job descriptions.
  7. Perform OB Limited Sonography after completion of competency process as defined in OB Unit policy.
  8. Provide the on-coming shift with all information pertinent to the care of each patient. Write legibly; document comprehensively.
  9. Be familiar with the operation of all equipment in the department and ensure that equipment is in proper working order. Ensure maintenance of an adequate level of supplies.
  10. Attend rounds with physicians as indicated, assist with exams, discuss patient progress. Review and implement physician’s orders.
  11. Make economical use of materials and ensure that proper charges are made when supplies are used.  Review electronic mail during each working shift.
  12. Perform other job related duties as assigned by Charge Nurse, Nursing Director or Nursing Supervisor.
