JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                                                                   

The Test & Turn Up Technician will be a member of the EF & I Services team and will be dedicated to adhering to procedures, focused on producing the best quality service, being highly productive and mindful of costs.  The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a challenging, dynamic, team-based environment.
 

The successful candidate must meet a majority of the knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience requirements outlined below.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                                                           

Responsible for the Testing and Turn Up and Analyze Troubles on our Customers' Equipment, Circuits and Fiber Optic Systems. This Technician would also be responsible for furnishing written and/or printouts  to our customer of the test results.

Perform the installation, terminating, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting of voice, data, and fiber optic premise distribution systems, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Test Fiber Optic Cables and Jumpers for continuity, loss, return loss, reflections and any other imperfections. Provide Documentation.
  • Test and Turnup all types of multiplexers to include: Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, DSC, Adtran, Emerson, Tellabs, Siemens, Fijitsu, Cisco and PulseCom.
  • Test and Turnup DACS (Digital Access Cross-connect Systems)
  • Test and Turnup Ethernet equipment and circuits.
  • Run tests with the NOC on equipment alarms that require IP Addresses.
  • Maintain a test equipment inventory and calibration due dates.
  • Provide technical expertise, work instructions, training and problem solving assistance to other installers and management. 
  • Be proficient using the follow test equipment:
    • OTDR, Fiber Optic Transmission Measuring Set, Visual Light Laser,(may be required to use a test set for more complex testing of fiber optical)
    • Bit Error Rate Test Sets to test metallic DS1 and DS3 Circuits Such as a T-BERD 310 or JDS UNIPHASE T-BERD 8000 with SONET Platform.
    • Ethernet Test Sets such as the Transport Module for the T-BERD 8000 Platform.
  • Maintain a library of technical manuals for customers' equipment and AFL's test equipment.
  • Adhere to and promote the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

  • Work with a variety of test and patch cords.
  • Able to stand, sit or crouch for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and/or other hazards.
  • Work indoors or outside plant.

 

Skills/Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED, Technical School or Associates Degree a plus
  • Over 5 years’ experience as a Network Services Test & Turn Up Technician, testing and trouble shooting of Telecommunication equipment
  • Knowledge of using laptop to connect to telecommunication equipment for testing purposes.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment assessments, background & reference checks. 
  • Must have a good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills combined with technical understanding of voice, data, and fiber optic systems. 
  • Must be proficient in the use of all tools, equipment, and testers related to Test & Turn Up work.
