Job Description

Georgia Military College seeks a full-time, English faculty member and Humanities Department Chair for the Augusta campus. This position within Academic Affairs will report directly to the Academic Dean. GMC is on the quarter system.  This person teaches twenty credit hours of English courses per the four main quarters (Fall 1, Fall, Winter and Spring) as well as oversees activities of the Humanities Department.   Applicant must be willing to teach day, evening, and/or weekend courses.  Faculty members have the option of teaching in the summer quarter when courses are available. Department Chair duties include: assist the Deans and Director in the administration of a specific area of instruction; consult with the Dean and the Director in determining faculty workloads and teaching assignments; coordinate the organization and conduct of classroom, laboratory, field experiences and field trips in the discipline area; coordinate with advisors from the Advising Center in regards to program requirements, transfer credit, and graduation requirements; submit recommended budget proposal when requested; ensure quality of teaching, counseling, and student tutoring by assigned faculty; monitor course syllabi, textbooks, and other instructional materials for quality and standardization; conduct quarterly department meetings in an effort to improve academic performance and standards; evaluate faculty in the classroom quarterly; act as a mentor for new faculty members; provide input to the Dean for preparing the quarterly class schedule; identify and actively recruit students; provide faculty members an opportunity for growth; submit required reports accurately and promptly; and perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Administration.

Georgia Military College focuses on providing learner-centered education that is active and engaging. Faculty members prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution to complete their liberal arts track. Salary and title will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.


The successful candidate must possess a Master's degree in English (Ph.D. preferred) or hold a Master’s degree and have 18 semester or 30 quarter hours in graduate English courses. Previous college teaching experience, knowledge of learner-centered education, and experience using a learning management system, such as Moodle, Blackboard, or WebCT is preferred. Department Chair and/or academic leadership experience is also highly preferred. This position is a non-tenure track, 12-month renewable appointment.

Start Date: The review process will commence immediately and continue until the necessary positions have been filled.
