Job Description:                                 INSURANCE VERIFICATION CLERK                                                     


Department:                                         Patient Services                                                                                                                                   

Responsible To:                                   Assistant Director and Director of Patient Services                                                                                      

Education/Training:                            High School Diploma or Equivalent required               


Skills & Abilities:                  Computer literacy and typing, medical terminology, general knowledge of medical insurance, good communication skills and professional appearance required.  


Physical Requirements:                      Must be able to sit for long periods of time.  May be required to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally required to bend, climb and kneel.  Must be able to see, hear and have the use of both hands.


Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside.  Occasionally exposed to noise, fumes & dust


Occupational Exposure:                    Category III = Job involves tasks or procedures that have no exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.




  1. Print census to verify for insurance benefits. 
  2. Call or search online for benefits and pre-certification on all inpatient and outpatient surgical patients. 
  3. Email UR Staff if clinical information is requested by the insurance company to certify the admission.
  4. Verify Medicare coverage and limitations via DDE on all inpatient Medicare accounts including Medicare replacements.
  5. Verify all MVA & Worker’s Compensation accounts and obtain billing information.
  6. Perform other job related duties as assigned by Management.
