Job Description:                                 UNIT SECRETARY


Department:                                         Emergency


Responsible To:                                   Nursing Director/Charge Nurse


Experience:                                           Medical Terminology required. Hospital or medical office experience desired.


Physical Requirements:                      Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking hearing, frequent mental/visual strain; the ability to work with close supervision and in stressful situations; the ability to handle all situations with emotional stability.


Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (75% of time) but may experience the following

hazards:  biological, radiation, and stress.


Occupational Exposure:                    Category II = Job involves tasks or procedures that have some exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.               




  1. Consistently determines that all patient chart identification is correct and all consent forms are signed.
  2. Answers intercom, call system or telephone (staff, patients, visitors) and accurately relays messages as necessary.  Initiates calls to physicians as ordered.
  3. Completes the initiation of all orders on the patient’s charts promptly and accurately.  Ensures that all charts are checked off at the end of the shift.
  4. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with the provision of care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area (neonate to adult/geriatric).
  5. Demonstrates familiarity with hospital equipment with their supplies and maintains adequate levels of chart materials, requisitions, and other nursing or medical forms.
  6. Demonstrates the proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment.
  7. Consistently uses tact, good judgment, and conducts self in a socially responsible manner as demonstrated by:  exemplary ethical conduct; refraining from discussing personal problems or confidential hospital or patient information to any unauthorized personnel.
  8. Interprets hospital policies to visitors or staff and communicates appropriately using good “guest relations” skills.
  9. Perform other job related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
