Job Description:                                 UNIT SECRETARY

 

Department:                                         Medical/Surgical

 

Responsible To:                                   Nurse Director/Head Nurse

 

Education/Training:                            High school graduate or equivalent.  BLS required.

 

Experience:                                           Experience as unit secretary preferred.

 

Physical Requirements:                      Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, and frequent mental/visual strain.  The ability to work with close supervision and in stressful situations; the ability to handle all situations with emotional stability.

 

Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (75% of time) but may experience the following

hazards: biological, radiation, and stress.  Occupational exposure Category II.

 

Occupational Exposure Category: II   Job involves tasks or procedures that have some exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties. 

Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assures that all patient chart identification is correct.
  2. Ensure that patient charts have ample supply of needed forms stamped accurately with patient identification.
  3. Answers intercom, call system and telephone as quickly as possible and accurately relays message.
  4. Initiates calls to physicians as requested.
  5. Enters physician orders in the computer system and enters all orders onto the Kardex.
  6. Relates appropriately to patients and visitors based on their age group and physical barriers.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with the care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patient served.
  7. Requests, obtains and charges for supplies and equipment.
  8. Interprets hospital policies to visitors or staff greeting visitors and answering phones.
  9. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, and religious/spiritual needs of patient and family.
  10. Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Director.
